Cars with the most suspension problems
Ranking of the cars we have analysed by the severity and frequency of their documented suspension faults. Each fault links to its page: symptoms, cost, how to check it and sources.
Of the 317 cars we have analysed, 140 have documented suspension faults. The one with the most accumulated risk is the Peugeot Expert III, because of “front suspension arms: mounting bolts and joint broken by corrosion”; it is followed by the Ford Transit and the Fiat Scudo III. For 177 we have found no documented suspension faults.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionFront suspension arms: mounting bolts and joint broken by corrosionIn September 2025 a Peugeot recall (Safety Gate SR/03211/25) was published for Expert and Traveller vehicles built between September 2020 and June 2022: the mounting bolts and the joint of the front arms can break because of corrosion, causing unpredictable steering behaviour.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRear suspension spring: badly welded centring pin (2021) and incorrectly fitted springs (2024)Peugeot has recalled Expert and Traveller vehicles over a badly welded rear spring centring pin (April 2021, 371 vehicles) and incorrectly fitted rear axle springs (February-June 2024, 1,662 vehicles): the spring can come loose and fall onto the road.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionShock absorber mounting to the bodywork with insufficient tightening torqueA Peugeot recall (MWE, Safety Gate SR/01285/25) covers Expert vehicles built between July 2024 and February 2025: the mounting of a shock absorber to the bodywork was fitted with insufficient tightening torque (90 Nm measured) and can break, causing loss of control of the vehicle.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionLower suspension arms with missing, partial or insufficiently penetrating weldsTwo 2020 recalls (20S47 and 20S53) affect the Transit's lower suspension arms: in units built from October 2019 to July 2020, welds may be missing or partial, and in units built from June to September 2020 the weld penetration on the left-hand arm does not meet the specification. There is a risk of breakage and an accident.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionInsufficient rear axle lubrication causing rear wheel bearing failureRecall 24S57 covers Transits built between 26 September 2023 and 29 April 2024: the rear axle may not be lubricated enough, which causes the wheel bearings to malfunction and can lock the rear wheels, with a loss of control.
- High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionCracked rear anti-roll bar on the 2015 TransitIn 2015 a warning was issued that the rear anti-roll bar on some dual rear wheel and single rear wheel 440E Transits could crack and compromise the vehicle's handling. It affects units built from 14 March to 21 October 2015.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRear suspension springs incorrectly fitted: they can come out of their seatFiat recalled 203 Scudos built between 16 February and 28 June 2024: the rear suspension springs may have been fitted incorrectly, risking loss of control of the vehicle and the spring coming out of its seat and falling onto the road.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionInsufficient tightening torque on the bolted shock absorber connectionA recall listed by Germany's KBA covers 2,244 Scudos built between 10 July 2024 and 13 February 2025: the tightening torque of the bolted shock absorber connection is insufficient and the mounting can be lost, with a risk of losing control of the car.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRecall for insufficient mounting of the front suspension arms (built 2020-2021)In December 2021 Tesla recalled Model Y and Model 3 cars built up to June 2021 because the mounting of the front suspension arms could be insufficient, with a risk of losing control of the vehicle.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRecall for possible breakage of the front wheel hub assembly (built 2020-2021)In April 2022 Tesla recalled Model Y cars built between June 2020 and November 2021 over a possible failure of the front wheel hub assembly, with a risk of losing control of the vehicle.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRear suspension spring: badly welded bracket (2021) and incorrectly fitted springs (2024)Toyota has recalled the Proace over the rear spring bracket (weld out of specification, April 2021) and over incorrectly fitted rear springs (2024, 497 vehicles): in the latter case the spring can come out of its seat and fall onto the road.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionSuspension arm bolts and lower arm ball joint (2016-2018)In March 2019 Toyota recalled Proace vehicles built between 2016 and 2018 over three suspension defects: deformed front and rear arm bolts that could break or come loose, and a lower arm ball joint that could become loose.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionFront and rear axle mounting bolts incorrectly tightened (2014-2015 units)In 2017 Mercedes recalled R-Class, M-Class and GLE models built between September 2014 and March 2015 because the front and rear axle bolts might not be properly secured, with a risk of overloading the remaining bolt and losing control.
- Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionWear and failure of the Airmatic air suspensionA second-hand buying guide from Diariomotor identifies the Airmatic air suspension as the R-Class point whose good condition is decisive in avoiding costly repairs, and even recommends preferring the conventional suspension. The guide gives no figures for faults or cost.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionRecall: the lower front shock absorber ball joint nut may lose tensionVolvo recalled the S60, S80 and V70 in January 2004 because the nut joining the lower ball joint of the front shock absorber to the suspension arm could lose tension due to an out-of-specification tolerance. It was corrected with a modified nut (DVSA R/2004/012; 9,735 vehicles in the United Kingdom).
- Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionWear of the suspension wishbones and shock absorber top mounts on the front axleGebrauchtwagenberater identifies the front axle as the big weak point of the 2000-2007 V70: faulty wishbones (Querlenker) and shock absorber top mounts (Domlager) are «not a rarity». It also points to frequent wear of the wheel bearings.
- Critical severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionCorrosion of the rear suspension armsIt does exist: Britain's DVSA recalled Trajets (and Santa Fes) built between 2000 and 2004 because corrosion could weaken the rear arms until they broke and affect steering control. The check measures the thickness of the metal and either applies wax or replaces the arms.
- Low severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionPremature wear of the upper front shock absorber mountsAccording to German Wikipedia, the upper front shock absorber mounts on the Trajet were not adapted to the MPV's greater weight and wear out early, with dull knocks when turning the steering wheel. It usually affects the left side more, where a rainwater drainage channel can drip onto the mount.
- High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionCracks in the rear subframe mountingsOn the oldest cars (before March 2000, according to gebrauchtwagenberater.de), cracks can appear at the points where the rear subframe is mounted to the body, especially on six-cylinder versions; BMW offered a preventive resin sealing as an alternative to a full repair.
- Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonSuspensionWear of the suspension bushes, ball joints and bushingsWith mileage, the suspension arm bushes, ball joints and bushings wear and cause vibrations, noises and less precise steering; fiches-auto.fr describes it as very recurrent between 60,000 and 180,000 km.Repair (garage): €300–€600Appears at around 60,000 km
- Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonSuspensionWear of wheel bearings, shock absorbers, springs and ball joints in the running gearThe Fiesta V's wheel bearings, shock absorbers, springs and ball joints wear with use across the range, with noise that grows with speed and knocking from the ball joints, according to both sources consulted.
- High severityRareFrequency: RareSuspensionRecall over a possible welding problem on the rear axlefiches-auto.fr records that certain Fiesta V cars were recalled over a possible welding problem on the rear axle, with no further detail on dates or chassis numbers affected.
- High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionBadly manufactured wheel hubsAuto Express documents a Passat B8 recall over badly manufactured wheel hubs, which can cause noise and premature bearing wear.Repair: €0
- Low severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionUnderbody noises: loose undertray or dry bushesSome Passat B8s produce a rattle from underneath that Auto Express attributes to a loose undertray or to suspension bushes that need lubricating.
