Audi Q2 problems (2016–today)
We have documented 2 engines and 1 gearbox for the Audi Q2; the DSG7 DQ200 gearbox has high or critical severity faults. The safest option is the 1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI in the 1.0 TSI EA211 (CHZ, DKL, DKR; 2014 onwards) and 1.5 TSI / 1.5 eTSI evo 114/130/150 hp (DPCA, DPBC; built from 2020) versions, with a «Buy» verdict.[1][2][3][4]
Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the Q2 has three recalls between 2017 and 2019: a defective rear wheel hub on 30 cars (shared with the A3 of the time), the electric parking brake on 3,650 cars, and a faulty weld in the rear head restraints on 147 further cars plus one isolated case. None reached a large part of production. The Volkswagen Group steering campaign of September 2026 does not include the Q2: it is limited to the Audi Q3.[5][6]

With cautionIt improves on the reliability of the 0AM, but does not eliminate its design weak points: it is still the same dry-clutch and mechatronic family, so you should carry out the same checks (history, stored fault codes, test drive) before buying.[7][8][9]
Faults that affect the Q2
Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The DSG7 DQ200 has 3 documented faults in total.
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentElectronicsMechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housingYes: the mechatronic unit is the DQ200's most cited weak point. Its pressure accumulator and hydraulic pump can fail because of a housing design defect, with fault warnings, limp mode or loss of drive; Volkswagen has acknowledged the problem with service actions and software updates.Repair (garage): €600–€2,200
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchPremature dry clutch wear and judder when drivingYes: the DQ200's dry clutch wears out sooner than a wet one, especially in stop-start urban traffic. It warns of its condition with judder or jerking when pulling away, slipping when accelerating and, in advanced cases, a burning smell; specialists put its service life at between 120,000 and 180,000 km depending on use.Repair (garage): €500–€1,100Appears at around 120,000 km

BuyIt has no documented systematic serious faults, and distances of 200,000 km without problems are cited. On 2018–2020 units, you only need to check that the injector recall was carried out.[1][2][3]

With cautionThe first units suffered cold jerking at low speed: buy one only if the software update is on record and after test-driving it from cold. The manual 150 hp cars built in May–June 2019 were also subject to a recall.[1][13][14]

BuyThe sources consider the 1.5 TSI from 2020 onwards much more mature than those of 2017–2019, with few complaints of jerking.[1][4]
Faults that affect the Q2
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingCoolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat moduleOn the EA211 the water pump and thermostat housing form a plastic module that, over the years, can crack or lose its seal and cause a slow loss of coolant. Keep an eye on the level: if it is ignored, it can end in overheating.
- Low severityFrequency: Very frequentElectronicsCold jerking at low speed ("kangaroo effect") on the 1.5 TSI evoThe 2017–2019 1.5 TSI evo can jerk and judder when pulling away and driving slowly with a cold engine, especially with a manual gearbox. It is a calibration fault, not a mechanical one: Volkswagen dealt with it through engine software updates between 2019 and 2020.
- Medium severityFrequency: RareElectronicsLack of torque on starting in the manual 150 hp 1.5 TSI (2019 recall)In 2019 Volkswagen, Seat and Škoda recalled 150 hp 1.5 TSI cars with a manual gearbox built in May and June 2019: when starting with a high electrical load, below 800 rpm, the engine could run out of torque to accelerate. It is fixed with a software update.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIntakeCarbon build-up on the intake valvesLike any direct-injection engine, the 1.0 and 1.5 TSI can accumulate carbon on the intake valves and ports, especially with urban use. It is usually noticed between 80,000 and 120,000 km as a loss of power, rough running and higher consumption.Appears at around 80,000 km
- Low severityFrequency: RareInjectionLeaking injectors on the 1.0 TSI (2020 recall)In 2020 Volkswagen, Seat and Škoda recalled around 9,200 cars with three-cylinder TSI engines from the 2018–2020 model years: their injectors could drip petrol into the chamber after the engine was switched off and exceed emission limits. The injectors are replaced.

Faults that affect the Q2
Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The 2.0 TDI has 8 documented faults in total.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingCoolant loss from the water pump or the coolersMany 2.0 TDI engines lose coolant. On the 150 hp EA288 the water pump is usually the culprit and, more rarely, the cylinder head; on the 140 hp EA189 the typical causes are the oil cooler or the EGR cooler.
- Low severityFrequency: RareTurboHissing when accelerating from damaged hoses or intercooler on the Transporter T6 2.0 TDIOn the Transporter T6 2.0 TDI (2015-2019) a hissing sound can be heard when accelerating, caused by loose or damaged hoses or a crack in the intercooler. Often there is no loss of power and no warning light; oil stains reveal the crack.

None reached a large part of production. The Volkswagen Group steering campaign of September 2026 does not include the Q2: it is limited to the Audi Q3.
Which Audi Q2 engine is the most reliable?
Among the 2 engines and 1 gearbox we have documented, the safest option is the 1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI in the 1.0 TSI EA211 (CHZ, DKL, DKR; 2014 onwards) and 1.5 TSI / 1.5 eTSI evo 114/130/150 hp (DPCA, DPBC; built from 2020) versions, with a «Buy» verdict. It has no documented systematic serious faults, and distances of 200,000 km without problems are cited. On 2018–2020 units, you only need to check that the injector recall was carried out.[1][2][3]
What problems does the Audi Q2 have apart from the engine?
Outside the engine, the Q2 has three recalls between 2017 and 2019: a defective rear wheel hub on 30 cars (shared with the A3 of the time), the electric parking brake on 3,650 cars, and a faulty weld in the rear head restraints on 147 further cars plus one isolated case. None reached a large part of production. The Volkswagen Group steering campaign of September 2026 does not include the Q2: it is limited to the Audi Q3. The most important documented faults are: the electric parking brake could apply inappropriately (brakes, critical severity), rear wheel hub with a manufacturing defect (August 2017 cars) (suspension, high severity) and rear head restraints with a faulty weld (147 cars) (airbags and safety, high severity).[5][6]
What faults does the Audi Q2 have?
The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: mechatronic unit failure: pressure accumulator, pump and cracked housing (DSG7 DQ200, high severity), premature dry clutch wear and judder when driving (DSG7 DQ200, medium severity), coolant loss from the water pump or the coolers (2.0 TDI, medium severity), coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat module (1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI, medium severity) and cold jerking at low speed ("kangaroo effect") on the 1.5 TSI evo (1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI, low severity).
What is the best year to buy a Audi Q2?
According to our rating by year, the best are 2026, 2025, 2024 and 3 other years with the same rating (6.8/10); the worst rated is 2017 (6.3/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
Does the Audi Q2 have recalls?
Yes: we have documented 4 campaigns for the Audi Q2, such as additional case of the same weld defect (2019). Check with your VIN at the official service centre whether yours has been done.[5]
