D4/D5 engine: faults and reliability
Volvo D4/D5 (5 cilindros and VEA) · Volvo
The Volvo D5/D4 covers two different engines: the classic 5-cylinder (2001-2016, D5244T/D5204) and the 4-cylinder VEA (D4204T, from 2013). On the former, several owners document the auxiliary belt breaking and taking the timing belt with it, destroying the engine; on the VEA the most common problems are the EGR, the DPF and oil consumption that can damage the turbo from 90,000-150,000 km. Neither is an engine to buy without checking its service history.[1][2][3][4]
Which D4/D5 versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
2.4/2.0 D3/D4/D5 5-cylinder (D5244T/D5204, 2001-2016)
2001–2016 · 136–215 hp · D5244T, D5204
Several owners document that the auxiliary belt can break and take the timing belt with it, destroying the engine as a result, between 74,000 and 119,000 km; check the timing belt history before buying.[3][6]
- With caution
2.0 D2/D3/D4/D5 VEA 4-cylinder (D4204T, 2013-2024)
2013–2024 · 120–235 hp · D4204T
The most repeated fault in the reliability sources consulted is the EGR valve, followed by the DPF and, on the 190 hp D4, oil consumption that can end up damaging the turbo from 90,000-150,000 km; none is serious enough to rule it out, but check the emissions system history and the oil level.[3][4][7]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the D4/D5
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityCommonFrequency: CommonTimingAuxiliary belt breakage that takes the timing belt with it (5-cylinder)Yes: on the 2.4/2.0 5-cylinder (D5244T/D5204, 2001-2016), several owners describe the auxiliary belt breaking and taking out or damaging the timing belt, with the engine destroyed. It happens in the S60 and XC60 between 74,000 and 119,000 km, and in one case not even the extended warranty covered it.
- 2High severityCommonFrequency: CommonLubricationHigh oil consumption from 90,000-150,000 km that harms the turbo (VEA)On the 190 hp VEA D4, several owners document oil consumption that soars from 90,000-150,000 km (up to 1 litre per 1,000 km in one case), and Fiches-auto.fr warns that this lack of lubrication can end up damaging the turbo. It describes it as "the most sensitive engine" on the Volvo V60 page.
- 3Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged EGR valve or EGR cooler leaking into the intakeYes, in both D4/D5 families: the EGR gets dirty or clogged, and its cooler can lose its seal and leak coolant into the intake. It appears in the XC60, S60, V40 and V60, between 56,000 and 180,000 km, with limp mode and, in some cases, several valve replacements.
- 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDPF (particulate filter) blockage and incomplete regenerationsYes: the D4/D5's diesel particulate filter (DPF) can clog or give sensor faults when regenerations are not completed, almost always because of short journeys. Documented in the XC60 (9 cases out of 132 testimonies), the XC90 and the S60/V40 VEA, sometimes together with AdBlue warnings.
- 5Medium severityRareFrequency: RareIntakeBreakage of the intake manifold swirl flap (5-cylinder)One documented case in the first-generation Volvo XC60 (2.4d of 163 hp) describes replacement of the intake manifold swirl flap at 120,000 km. With the sources available we have only been able to confirm that specific case for this engine, so we cannot say it is widespread.

What the D4/D5 is
Volvo designed its own inline five-cylinder diesel engine, with common rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger, introduced in 2001 with 163 hp for the S60, S80 and V70. It was built in two capacities: the main 2.4-litre (D5244T) and a shorter-stroke 2.0-litre version (D5204). Depending on output and year, it was sold as the D3 (136-150 hp), D4 (163-181 hp) or D5 (185-215 hp), and also powered the XC70, XC90 and first-generation XC60. In 2005 Volvo raised the D5 from 163 to 185 hp with a larger turbo, seven-hole injectors (previously five) and a particulate filter now fitted as standard.[2][5][8]
From 2013 Volvo gradually replaced this engine with the VEA (Volvo Engine Architecture), a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel with an aluminium block, code D4204T, shared with the petrol versions of the same family. Depending on the output level it was sold as the D2 (single turbo, 120 hp), D3 (variable-geometry turbo, 150 hp), D4 (twin turbo, 190 hp) or D5 (twin turbo with the PowerPulse anti-lag system, 225-235 hp), and reached almost the whole range: XC60, XC90, S60, V60, V40 and, in its final years, the V70 and S80. From 2019 several models began calling versions of the same block B4 or B5, with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. Volvo stopped making diesel engines in 2024.[1][7]
In total, the D5/D4 has powered Volvo saloons (S60, S80), estates (V40, V60, V70, XC70) and SUVs (XC60, XC90), almost always with front-wheel drive and, on the most powerful versions or those with the AWD suffix, with four-wheel drive.[5][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]
The aggregated reliability data from Fiches-auto.fr, with owner testimonies spread across the S60, V60, XC60 (both generations), second-generation XC90 and V40, place emissions system faults (EGR, DPF) and, on the 5-cylinder engine, the auxiliary belt, as the most repeated problem points; we have not found that Volvo has acknowledged any of them with its own campaign or recall.[3][4][6][7][15][16][17]

What changed between versions
2001–2016
2.4/2.0 D3/D4/D5 5-cylinder (D5244T/D5204, 2001-2016)
Volvo's own engine, an inline five-cylinder with common rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger, launched in 2001 with 163 hp for the S60, S80 and V70. It was built in two capacities (2.4 and a shorter-stroke 2.0-litre version) and sold as the D3, D4 or D5 depending on output. In 2005 the D5 went from 163 to 185 hp with a larger turbo, seven-hole injectors (previously five) and a particulate filter now fitted as standard; in the XC90's final years it reached 200-215 hp.[2][5][8]
2013–2024
2.0 D2/D3/D4/D5 VEA 4-cylinder (D4204T, 2013-2024)
New-generation diesel (Volvo Engine Architecture), a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an aluminium block, which gradually replaced the 5-cylinder from 2013: D2 (single turbo, 120 hp), D3 (variable-geometry turbo, 150 hp), D4 (twin turbo, 190 hp) and D5 (twin turbo with the PowerPulse anti-lag system, 225-235 hp). From 2019 some models began calling variants of the same block B4 or B5, with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance; Volvo stopped making diesel engines in 2024.[1][7]
