Stalling and restart failures due to control unit software on the e-Skyactiv D 3.3

Mazda has corrected with software updates several cases in which the CX-60's engine could stall at idle, fail to restart after i-stop or go into limp mode with little warning. These are free recalls, not a mechanical defect of the inline-six.[1][2]

Why this rating?

High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.

Frequency occasional: These are preventive campaigns with a software fix; no source quantifies how many cars suffered the symptom. In the UK, for example, the DVSA counts 758 cars in AR056A, 429 in AP049A and 3,067 in AP047A. On the guide's scale, a preventive campaign with a definitive fix is "occasional".[1][2]

Symptoms

Why it happens

Incorrect software programming in several control units (engine control PCM, battery management BECM, transmission TCM and the instrument cluster power supply unit, Dash-ESU) according to Safety Gate; in the older British campaigns the PCM or the DC-AC inverter of the mild-hybrid system is reprogrammed.[1][2]

If it is not repaired: A stall or start failure while driving increases the risk of an accident; Safety Gate classes AR056A as a serious alert.[2]

Affected cars and years

AR056A affects CX-60 cars with "T3 M Hybrid Boost" (the 3.3 diesel) built between 28/09/2022 and 23/07/2024 (Safety Gate SR/01913/25). The British campaigns AP014A, AP047A and AP049A are listed for the CX-60 without distinguishing the powertrain, with production between September 2022 and July 2023, so we cannot be sure which ones include the diesel.[1][2]

Includes: Reprogramming of the affected control units at an authorised workshop, with no cost to the owner announced in the sources consulted.[1][2]

The sources publish no price; confirm with the VIN at the official dealer whether the campaign has been done.

Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

How to check for it before buying a used car

  • Ask the official Mazda dealer to check campaigns AR056A, AP047A, AP049A and AP014A against the VIN and confirm that they have been carried out.[1][2]
  • If the car has ever stalled or gone into limp mode, insist on the service record before buying.

How to prevent it

  • Respond to the campaign letter or check it with the VIN; the fix is a software update.[2]

Frequently asked questions

Is it a fault of the 3.3 diesel engine?

According to the sources it is a control unit software fault, not a mechanical defect of the inline-six; the remedy is reprogramming at the official dealer.[1][2]

How do I know if my CX-60 is in the campaign?

Give the VIN to an official Mazda dealer: they will tell you which campaigns affect your car and whether they have already been carried out.[2]

Can I keep using the car?

The campaigns themselves point to a risk of accident if the engine stalls while driving, so it is best to visit the official dealer as soon as possible.[2]

What can you do now?

We will put you in touch with a partner only if you authorise it in the form.
