Problems with paintwork and corrosion: symptoms, cost and affected models
We have documented 104 faults with paintwork and corrosion in 99 cars. The most important by severity and frequency: corrosion in the wheel arches, sills and, in advanced cases, the rear axle (Mercedes-Benz Clase C W203), body corrosion: door edges, battery tray and suspension turrets (Mercedes-Benz Clase E W210) and corrosion of the boot, the spring seats and the door frames (Mercedes-Benz Clase C W202).
How it works and why it fails
Paintwork, rust and corrosion
The quality of the paint and of the corrosion protection varies greatly between models and eras. Some cars have thin paint that chips off with gravel, and others have specific spots that rust sooner than normal: door bottoms, wheel arches or structural parts.
What to do
Touch up stone chips before rust sets in and wash the underside after driving on salted roads. When buying a used car, check door bottoms, wheel arches, tailgate and sills: structural rust can be grounds for failing the MOT-style inspection (ITV in Spain).
