Code P0715: automatic gearbox input speed sensor

P0715 means: transmission input/turbine speed sensor circuit "A".[1][2] The input/turbine speed sensor tells the gearbox control unit how fast the input shaft is turning, which it uses to calculate the gear ratio and torque converter slip. The code is set when the control unit does not receive the correct signal.[2][3]

What code P0715 means

The input/turbine speed sensor tells the gearbox control unit how fast the input shaft is turning, which it uses to calculate the gear ratio and torque converter slip. The code is set when the control unit does not receive the correct signal.[2][3]

It is a generic OBD-II code (it starts with P0), so it means the same on any make. It occurs on automatic gearboxes.[1][4]

Original definition (SAE J2012): Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit[1][2]

Causes of P0715

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Faulty input speed sensor.[2][3][4]
  2. 2Damaged wiring harness, open or shorted, or a corroded connector.[2][3][4]
  3. 3Sensor poorly seated or with excessive play.[3]
  4. 4Control unit fault.[4]

Symptoms

How to diagnose P0715

In order: from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1Read the input speed in live data while driving and compare it with the engine speed.[3]
  2. 2Inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness.[3]
  3. 3Check that the sensor is properly seated.[3]
  4. 4Test the sensor and replace it if it is out of specification; the control unit is the last step.[3][4]

Can I keep driving with P0715?

Garage soon

AutoDTCs rates it as high: risk of limp mode and harsh shifts, and advises avoiding the motorway until it is repaired. Other sources do not grade the severity.[3]

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with code P0715?

Only as far as a garage, and avoiding high speeds: the gearbox may drop into limp mode.[3]

Is it the sensor or the wiring?

The sources cite both. The connector and wiring are checked first, and the sensor is replaced if it is out of specification.[2][3][4]

Does it affect every gearbox?

It is a code for automatic gearboxes with an input sensor; it does not apply to manuals.[1][2]

Will I pass the MOT with code P0715?

If the code has switched on the engine warning light, no: with that light on, the inspection records a serious defect, and on Euro 5 and Euro 6 cars the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) also reads the OBD diagnostic system. Repair the fault before you go; clearing the code just before the inspection does not help either, because it counts as a serious defect.[5]
