1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power engine: faults and reliability

Nissan 1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power (KR15DDT, híbrido en serie) · Nissan

There is still little reliability data: the three-cylinder 1.5 VC-Turbo only generates electricity and no mechanical faults are known in Europe. The documented weak points are in the e-Power electronics: battery campaigns and isolated cases of immobilisation.[1][2][3]

Which 1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsSafe mode due to battery controller calibration (loss of propulsion)Nissan recalled 5,661 Qashqai e-Power cars built between July 2025 and May 2026: a battery controller fault can trigger a protection mode that stops the car. It is fixed free of charge with a software update.
  2. 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalFuelFuel line that slips out of its clip and may leakNissan has campaigns for Qashqai J12 cars built between May 2021 and October 2024: a fuel line can move in its clip, become damaged and leak, with a risk of fire. The source does not specify whether it includes the e-Power.
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicse-Power warning and limited mode due to incorrect state-of-charge readingOn Qashqai J12 cars built from September 2021 to January 2024, the calculated battery state of charge can change abruptly: the e-Power warning appears, power drops and the car may not restart. There is a recall.
  4. 4High severityFrequency: RareElectronicse-Power generator failure with the car immobilisedThere are isolated reports of Qashqai e-Power cars immobilised by a failure of the e-Power system's generator; we have found no statistics or specific campaign, so it cannot be called a widespread fault.

What the 1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power is

The e-Power is a series hybrid with no plug: a 1.5 variable-compression turbo petrol engine (from 8:1 to 14:1) drives a generator and an electric motor turns the wheels, so the petrol engine is not connected directly to them. The power figures we give (190 to 213 hp) are those of the electric motor, not the petrol engine.[5][7][8]

In Europe it debuted in the Nissan Qashqai (J12), with a 190 hp, 330 Nm electric motor, and arrived in the X-Trail (T33) in September 2022, with 204 hp and 213 hp with the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive. The X-Trail data comes from a provisional technical table on German Wikipedia and should be checked against the official specification sheet.[4][6][7][8]

The public fault records we consulted mainly cover the Qashqai; the European X-Trail has no data of its own yet. The NHTSA investigation in the US into the KR15DDT/KR20DDET engines (main bearings) concerns American models, and we have found no European cases confirming it.[1][5]

What changed between versions

  1. since 2022

    1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power 190 hp (Qashqai J12, since 2022)

First European application of the second-generation e-Power: a 1.5 variable-compression three-cylinder that only generates electricity and an electric motor of around 190 hp and 330 Nm that drives the front wheels; it cannot be plugged in.[7][8]

  2. since 2022

    1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power 204 hp (X-Trail T33, front-wheel drive, since 2022)

Same series concept as the Qashqai, with an electric motor of around 204 hp and front-wheel drive; the European X-Trail was presented in September 2022.[4][6]

  3. since 2022

    1.5 VC-Turbo e-Power e-4ORCE 213 hp (X-Trail T33, all-wheel drive, since 2022)

All-wheel-drive version with a second electric motor on the rear axle (e-4ORCE), around 213 hp; the technical table consulted is provisional and should be checked against the official specification sheet.[4][6]
