P2002 on Peugeot: causes and affected engines
Documented faults in Peugeot engines that can trigger P2002
Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the particulate filter: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.
2.0 HDi
In 307, 308 I and 407
2.2 HDi
In 407, 607 and 807
1.6 HDi
In 206, 207, 208 I, 301, 307, 308 I and 9 more models
2.0 BlueHDi
In 308 II, 508 I, 508 II, 3008 II, 5008 II and Expert III
Common causes of P2002 on any make
From most to least likely, according to the sources.
- 1Faulty differential pressure sensor for the filter, or damaged sensor hoses, giving a wrong reading. Ross-Tech documents sensors that were faulty from the factory on some Skoda Superb (3U) and VW Passat (3B) models with certain engines, which distorted the calculation of the filter load and caused failed regenerations.[1][2][3]
- 2The particulate filter itself, damaged or degraded, no longer retaining particles as effectively as intended.[1][2][3]
- 3Air or exhaust gas leaks upstream of the filter.[1][2]
- 4Poor-quality diesel with excess sulphur, which can clog the filter.[1][2]
What to check first
The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.
- 1Consult the workshop manual and the manufacturer's bulletins, read the codes with a diagnostic tool and resolve any other stored code first.[1][2]
- 2Check the filter's differential pressure sensor and the hoses connecting it to the filter (cracks, blockages), as well as its connector and wiring. If the sensor is doubtful, replace it before touching the filter.[1][2][3]
- 3Look for air or exhaust leaks upstream of the filter and repair them.[1][2]
Frequently asked questions
Which Peugeot engines have faults that can trigger P2002?
2.0 HDi (1 fault), 2.2 HDi (1 fault), 1.6 HDi (1 fault) and 2.0 BlueHDi (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.
What does code P2002 mean on a Peugeot?
Diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold (bank 1). The control unit checks whether the particulate filter (DPF) is retaining soot as it should: it compares the exhaust gas pressure and temperature at the filter inlet and outlet. If the amount of particles it captures falls below the minimum calibrated by the manufacturer, it stores the code. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Peugeot as on any other make.[1][2][4]
Can I keep driving with P2002?
Garage soon. Mechanic Base rates it as medium severity: you do not need to stop immediately and you can get home or to the workshop, but you should not carry on like this because the car may go into limp mode with limited power. HELLA states that if the regeneration warning light stays on or flashes, the regeneration cannot complete and you need to go to a specialist workshop straight away to avoid serious engine damage. RACE advises against driving in limp mode because it increases pressure and temperature in the exhaust and can damage other components.[1][5][6]
