2.2 HDi engine (DW12): faults and reliability

PSA/Ford 2.2 HDi and TDCi (DW12) · Peugeot, Citroën, Ford and Land Rover

This is a diesel derived from the 2.0 HDi that PSA and Ford shared in large saloons and MPVs (407, 607, 807, C5, C6, C8) and that Land Rover and Ford used under their own names (TDCi, TD4, SD4) in the Mondeo IV, the Freelander 2 and the first Evoque. According to fiches-auto it does not suffer chronically from the turbo or dual-mass flywheel problems of smaller HDi engines, but the 128-138 hp version does have a recurring problem of DPF clogging.[1][2][3][4]

Which 2.2 HDi versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.2 HDi 128-138 (DW12 TED4, single turbo, 2000-2006)

    2000–2006 · 128–138 hp · DW12, DW12TED4

    With caution

Fiches-auto documents a recurring DPF clogging problem in this version (98 cases out of 277 reviews); check the maintenance history of the DPF and the additive system before buying.[4]

  • We have not found reliability tables with documented cases specific to this 150-156 hp version, but nor have we found any recurring problem flagged in the technical tests consulted.[8][9]

  • 2.2 HDi 170-175 twin-turbo (DW12 BTED4, 2005-2010)

    2005–2010 · 170–175 hp · DW12, DW12BTED4, ZSD-422

    With caution

The two-turbo system adds mechanical complexity; fiches-auto records a significant number of turbo cases in the twin-turbo versions, although, according to the same source, it does not amount to a chronic problem.[4][6]

  • 2.2 HDi 190-204 twin-turbo (DW12 C, 2010-2015)

    2010–2015 · 190–204 hp · DW12, DW12C, ZSD-422

    With caution

Fiches-auto finds hardly any DPF cases in this version (0 out of 172 and 0 out of 42 reviews), but does find a significant number of turbo cases (16 of 172); check the history of the turbocharging system.[6]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.2 HDi

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDPF clogging with additive, especially on the 128-138 hp versionThe particulate filter (DPF) with additive on the 2.2 HDi has a documented recurring problem in the 128-138 hp version (98 cases out of 277 reviews on fiches-auto); the more powerful twin-turbo versions show far fewer cases. The emissions fault warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power.
  2. 2High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo faults, somewhat more frequent on the sequential twin-turbo versionsThe 2.2 HDi comes in single-turbo versions (128-156 hp) and twin-turbo versions with two turbochargers in sequence (170 hp and up). Fiches-auto does not consider it a chronic problem, but it does record a significant number of turbo cases across all power outputs, somewhat higher on the twin-turbos.
  3. 3High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionPiezo injector wear and failureThe 2.2 HDi uses third-generation common-rail injection with piezo injectors at up to 1,800-2,000 bar. Fiches-auto documents injector cases across several power outputs, without it being the most repeated fault, with symptoms of hard starting, jerking or higher fuel consumption.
  4. 4Medium severityRareFrequency: RareClutchDual-mass flywheel wear, less frequent than on other HDi enginesThe 2.2 HDi has a dual-mass flywheel but, unlike smaller HDi engines such as the 1.6 HDi, fiches-auto does not document a chronic problem: very few cases in the tables consulted. Even so, it is a wear part: vibration and knocking are the signs to watch for before buying.

What the 2.2 HDi is

The 2.2 HDi was born in 2000 within PSA's DW family, as the larger-displacement variant of the 2.0 HDi (DW10), for the group's big cars: it arrived with the launch of the Citroën C5, Peugeot 406 and Peugeot 607. Internally it is known as the DW12 and, like the 2.0, it was developed under the diesel engine agreement between PSA and Ford.[1][10]

The first versions (2000-2006) produce around 128-138 hp with a single turbo and a particulate filter (DPF) with additive as standard: this is the engine of the Peugeot 607, the Peugeot 807/Citroën C8 (128-130 hp) and the Peugeot 407/Citroën C5 (136-138 hp). From 2005-2006 a 170-173 hp version appears with two fixed-geometry turbochargers working in sequence (one at low revs, the second joining in from around 2,700 rpm), available in the Peugeot 407, 607 and 807, and in the Citroën C5, C6 and C8. Separately, the Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser, the PSA-engined versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander, use a 156 hp variant with a single variable-geometry turbo. From 2010, a final twin-turbo revision of 200-204 hp was offered in the second-generation Citroën C5.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Ford used a version of this engine under its own designation (2.2 TDCi) in the Ford Mondeo IV, with 155-175 hp from 2007 and 200 hp from 2010; a 2004 test of the Mondeo itself already describes that 2.2 TDCi as an evolution of the 2.0 TDCi shared with PSA. Land Rover did the same, as the 2.2 TD4/eD4 (150 hp) and 2.2 SD4 (190 hp), in the Freelander 2 (2006-2014) and in the first Range Rover Evoque (2011-2015, before moving to its own Ingenium engine). French Wikipedia describes these versions as "of PSA DW12 origin" or "PSA/Ford DW12/Duratorq"; English Wikipedia on the Ford Duratorq engine, on the other hand, states without a citation that the Ford version (code ZSD-422, Bosch injection, built in Dagenham) is an in-house design unrelated to the DW12. We include these applications because most of the open sources consulted point to a common origin, but we flag this contradiction under "What we still don't know".[2][3][5][7][13][14]

According to fiches-auto, which collects several hundred owner reviews per version, the 2.2 HDi "is rarely the subject of criticism" and does not suffer chronically from the turbo or dual-mass flywheel problems that do affect smaller HDi engines such as the 1.6 HDi; the main documented exception is a recurring problem of DPF clogging, concentrated in the 128-138 hp version.[4][6][15]

What changed between versions

  1. 2000–2006

    2.2 HDi 128-138 (DW12 TED4, single turbo, 2000-2006)

First generation of the engine: a single turbo and a particulate filter (DPF) with additive as standard. It is the launch engine of the Peugeot 607 (133 hp), the Peugeot 807/Citroën C8 (128-130 hp) and the Peugeot 407/Citroën C5 (136-138 hp).[1][10][11][16][17]

  2. 2005–2010

    2.2 HDi 170-175 twin-turbo (DW12 BTED4, 2005-2010)

It adds a second turbocharger: two fixed-geometry turbos working in sequence (one at low revs, the second joining in from around 2,700 rpm) to reduce response lag without losing low-rev torque. It is the most powerful version in the Peugeot 407, 607 and 807, and the Citroën C5, C6 and C8; Ford used a similar output (155-175 hp) in the Ford Mondeo IV under the name 2.2 TDCi.[7][11][12][18][19]

  3. 2006–2012

    2.2 HDi 150-156 (single variable-geometry turbo, 2006-2012)

A more powerful version than the launch one but keeping a single turbo, now variable-geometry (not twin-turbo). It was fitted to the Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser, the PSA-engined versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander; Land Rover offered a similar output (150 hp) as the 2.2 TD4/eD4 in the Freelander 2 and the first Evoque.[3][5][8][9]

  4. 2010–2015

    2.2 HDi 190-204 twin-turbo (DW12 C, 2010-2015)

Final revision of the sequential twin-turbo, with third-generation common-rail injection up to 2,000 bar and up to 204 hp/450 Nm; it was offered in the second-generation Citroën C5 (Tourer) until the 2.0 BlueHDi versions replaced it. Ford and Land Rover offered an equivalent output (190-200 hp) in the Ford Mondeo IV (from 2010) and as the 2.2 SD4 in the Freelander 2 and the first Evoque.[2][3][5][7]
