P0200 on Kia: causes and affected engines
Documented faults in Kia engines that can trigger P0200
Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the injectors: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.
1.0 T-GDI
In Ceed III, Picanto III, ProCeed, Rio IV, Stonic and XCeed
1.6 CRDi
In Carens III, Ceed I, Ceed II, Ceed III, Soul II, Sportage IV and 3 more models
1.7 CRDi
In Carens IV, Optima III, Optima IV, Sportage III and Sportage IV
1.1 and 1.4 CRDi
In Ceed II, Rio III, Rio IV and Venga
2.0 CRDi (D4EA)
In Carens II, Cerato I and Sportage II
Common causes of P0200 on any make
From most to least likely, according to the sources.
- 1Faulty injector: a solenoid with an open or shorted winding. This is the first cause cited by Autodoc Club, AutoDTCs and Baileys Diesel.[1][2][3]
- 2Damaged wiring in the injector circuit: open sections, chafed wires, deteriorated insulation, or a short to ground or to positive.[1][2][3]
- 3Injector connectors that are loose, corroded or have pushed-back terminals.[1][2][3]
- 4Power supply or ground faults in the circuit: injector fuse or relay, broken earth wires or poor earths.[1][2][3]
What to check first
The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.
- 1Read the code and the freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scan tool and check which other codes are stored. If P0200 comes with just one cylinder code (P0201 to P0204), the problem is in that injector's circuit; if it comes with several, it is in something shared: supply, ground or driver.[2][3]
- 2Inspect the injector connectors and wiring loom: open or pushed-back terminals, corrosion, melted insulation, chafing against engine parts, oil. With the engine running, wiggle the loom and connectors while watching the scan tool data to spot an intermittent fault. Cleaning the contacts with contact spray and repairing them is the cheapest fix.[1][2][3]
- 3Check the injector fuses and relay and make sure power reaches them with the ignition on. Bear in mind that, according to Pico, the solenoid injectors of a diesel common rail are driven at 50 to 90 V, so on those engines it is best to leave live-circuit measurements to a workshop.[2][3][5]
Frequently asked questions
Which Kia engines have faults that can trigger P0200?
1.0 T-GDI (1 fault), 1.6 CRDi (1 fault), 1.7 CRDi (1 fault), 1.1 and 1.4 CRDi (1 fault) and 2.0 CRDi (D4EA) (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.
What does code P0200 mean on a Kia?
Injector circuit malfunction. The ECU has detected an electrical fault in the circuit that operates the injectors. According to AutoDTCs, the ECU fires each injector by switching the ground side of its solenoid, and the code is set when it detects that the circuit is open, shorted to ground or shorted to positive. Baileys Diesel describes it in similar terms: an out-of-range voltage, an open circuit or a short circuit. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Kia as on any other make.[1][2][3][4][6]
Can I keep driving with P0200?
Garage soon. The sources do not agree on how serious it is. Autodoc Club advises against continuing to drive because of the risk of serious engine damage, and Baileys Diesel calls it a serious code that can end in an expensive fault if not dealt with promptly. AutoDTCs rates it as moderate: you can drive for a short time, but it must be repaired soon because a dead cylinder dumps unburnt fuel into the exhaust and can damage the catalytic converter. If the engine light is flashing, there is an active misfire and AutoDTCs recommends not driving for long. The sensible course is to go to a workshop without making any more journeys than necessary.[1][2][3]
