1.6 CRDi engine: faults and reliability
Hyundai/Kia 1.6 CRDi (familia U: U2 D4FB and Smartstream U3 D4FE) · Hyundai and Kia
The U2 D4FB (2009-2018) is a generally robust diesel if well maintained, with known turbo failures in the early units and timing chain problems from 120,000-150,000 km. Its successor, the Smartstream (U3 D4FE, from 2018), has a good reputation, except in the 48V mild hybrid version, which has a belt tensioner and crankshaft pulley fault that can destroy the engine.[1][2][3]
Which 1.6 CRDi versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
1.6 CRDi U2 (D4FB, 90-136 hp, sold in Spain from 2010 to ~2018)
2010–2018 · 90–136 hp · D4FB
Generally a durable engine, but with documented turbo failures in the early units and with the timing chain as something to check from 120,000 km; buy it with a maintenance history and check those two points.[1][7][8]
- Buy
Smartstream 1.6 CRDi U3 (D4FE, 115-136 hp, without mild hybrid, from 2018)
since 2018 · 115–136 hp · D4FE
German buying guides do not attribute any typical weak points to it beyond the normal wear of a diesel (EGR, DPF, turbo, injectors) at high mileage or with heavy urban use, and the analysis of Kia Ceed inspection (MOT-type) data does not single this engine out as a problem area of its own either.[2][9]
- With caution
Smartstream 1.6 CRDi 48V mild hybrid (D4FE MHEV, 136 hp, from ~2019)
since 2019 · 136 hp · D4FE
It shares the good reputation of the Smartstream without mild hybrid, but adds a specific and serious fault: the MHSG belt tensioner can seize and, by straining the crankshaft pulley, shear its locating pin and put the engine out of time. Before buying, check whether the garage has applied the tensioner inspection and the new tightening torque.[3][10]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.6 CRDi
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityCommonFrequency: CommonTimingMHSG belt tensioner and crankshaft pulley failure (48V mild hybrid)On the 48V mild hybrid version, the tensioner of the starter-generator (MHSG) belt can seize; the belt slips or breaks and the overload can shear the pin that secures the pulley to the crankshaft, putting the engine out of time and causing the pistons and valves to collide.
- 2Critical severityCommonFrequency: CommonTimingTiming chain stretchThe two timing chains of the U2 D4FB (one of which also drives the high-pressure pump) tend to stretch at around 120,000-150,000 km, with a characteristic metallic rattle. If left unattended, the chain can jump teeth and cause the pistons and valves to collide.Appears at around 120,000 km
- 3High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboPremature variable-geometry turbo (VGT) failureThe first units of the U2 D4FB (up to ~2009) had variable-geometry turbos that could fail between 30,000 and 100,000 km; the manufacturer corrected this with an ECU update. On later engines, the actuator can seize because of carbon build-up.Appears at around 30,000 km
- 4High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionFuel pressure regulator and injectors sensitive to diesel qualityThe common-rail pressure regulator can seize and bleed off too much fuel, which makes starting difficult; the system works at a high pressure (around 1,600 bar) that makes it sensitive to poor-quality diesel, and the injectors need individual coding if they are replaced.
- 5Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlEGR valve blocked by carbon build-upAs on most diesels of its era, the 1.6 CRDi's EGR valve accumulates carbon with urban and cold-start use, especially beyond 80,000 km, and causes jerking when accelerating between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm and the engine fault light to come on.Repair (garage): €200–€450
- 6Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonEmissions controlParticulate filter (DPF) blocked in urban useOn cars used mainly for short urban journeys (under 15 km), the particulate filter never completes its regeneration cycle and clogs with soot, which turns on the DPF warning light and reduces engine power.Repair (garage): €300–€1,800

What the 1.6 CRDi is
The 1.6 CRDi is a four-cylinder in-line diesel of 1,582 cc, with twin overhead camshafts and 16 valves, developed jointly by Hyundai and Kia within the U family. The U2 generation (code D4FB) became widespread around 2009-2010 with a variable-geometry turbo (VGT), Bosch common-rail injection and a timing drive using two chains (one of which also drives the high-pressure pump); depending on the version it produces between 90 and 136 hp, with maximum torque of up to 320 Nm.[1][4][11]
It was fitted to a very wide range of Hyundai models (i30, i20, Tucson, Kona, i40, ix20, Accent, Elantra) and Kia models (Ceed, XCeed, Sportage, Venga, Soul, Carens, Cerato/Forte, Stonic), normally with the same power figures across both brands as they share platform and mechanicals.[4]
From 2018, Hyundai and Kia progressively replaced it with the Smartstream 1.6 CRDi (U3, code D4FE): a lighter aluminium block that keeps the chain-driven timing and meets Euro 6d-Temp/6d with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and AdBlue. From around 2019 it has also been offered with a 48-volt mild hybrid system (MHSG starter-generator and a 0.44 kWh lithium-ion battery), always with 136 hp.[5][12][13]
Do not confuse it with the larger-capacity 1.7 CRDi (code D4FD): the Hyundai ix35 and the Kia Sportage III used that engine, not the 1.6 CRDi, and the fourth-generation Kia Carens (RP, 2013-2019) also used the 1.7 CRDi; the Carens 1.6 CRDi belongs to the previous generation (up to 2013).[4]

What changed between versions
2010–2018
1.6 CRDi U2 (D4FB, 90-136 hp, sold in Spain from 2010 to ~2018)
Generation with variable-geometry turbo, Bosch common-rail injection and 17.0-17.3:1 compression. Over its commercial life it moved from Euro 5 to Euro 6b and gained power, up to 136 hp with VGT in the mid-2010s Ceed, XCeed and Venga.[1][14][15]
since 2018
Smartstream 1.6 CRDi U3 (D4FE, 115-136 hp, without mild hybrid, from 2018)
Aluminium block (lighter than the D4FB), the same chain-driven timing and a new thermal management system. It meets Euro 6d-Temp/6d through SCR with AdBlue. It is offered with Stop/Start as standard, without the 48V starter-generator of the mild hybrid version.[5][11][16]
since 2019
Smartstream 1.6 CRDi 48V mild hybrid (D4FE MHEV, 136 hp, from ~2019)
Adds a belt-driven 48V starter-generator (MHSG) with a 0.44 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides a small amount of electric assistance (around 12-16 kW) and allows coasting with the combustion engine switched off. It is identified in the spec sheet as 'mild-hybrid' or '48V'.[6][12][13]
