P0190 on Opel: causes and affected engines

P0190 means: fuel rail pressure sensor circuit: circuit malfunction.[1][2][3][4] Opel has 4 documented faults that can trigger it, across 4 engines: 1.3 Multijet, 1.5 BlueHDi, 2.0 BlueHDi and 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI. Only a diagnosis can confirm the cause on your car.

Documented faults in Opel engines that can trigger P0190

Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the fuel pump: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.

Common causes of P0190 on any make

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Faulty rail pressure sensor: it is the first cause on the list at Autodoc Club and Mechanic Base. On Volkswagen group vehicles, Ross-Tech identifies it as sensor G247.[1][2][5][6]
  2. 2Damaged sensor wiring, with a short circuit (Ross-Tech mentions a short to ground, at or near the sensor) or with deteriorated insulation.[1][2][5][6]
  3. 3Sensor connectors that are corroded, loose or making poor contact.[1][2][5][6]
  4. 4Faulty ECU: the three sources that mention it put it at the end of the list.[1][2][6]

What to check first

The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1Read the code and the freeze frame data with a diagnostic tool and see whether other codes are stored, especially rail pressure ones (P0191 to P0194, P0087, P0088), which rely on the signal from the same sensor.[2][5][7]
  2. 2Inspect the sensor connector (corrosion, loose pins, damage) and the wiring (insulation, chafing, sections touching ground). Cleaning and tightening the connections is the cheapest step and rules out a common cause.[1][2][5][6]
  3. 3With the diagnostic tool, compare the requested rail pressure with the one the sensor measures. According to Pico, a signal stuck at 0 V or 5 V indicates the sensor has failed; afterwards, it is worth confirming whether the origin is the sensor or its wiring.[7][8]

Frequently asked questions

Which Opel engines have faults that can trigger P0190?

1.3 Multijet (1 fault), 1.5 BlueHDi (1 fault), 2.0 BlueHDi (1 fault) and 2.0 DTI and 2.2 DTI (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.

What does code P0190 mean on a Opel?

Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit: circuit malfunction. The rail pressure sensor measures the fuel pressure in the rail and reports it to the ECU, which uses it to regulate the pressure and the quantity injected. P0190 means the ECU has detected a problem in the circuit between that sensor and itself; according to Autodoc Club, the sensor is working outside the expected parameters. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Opel as on any other make.[1][2][3][4][7]

Can I keep driving with P0190?

Garage soon. The sources do not agree on severity. Autodoc Club allows short trips but does not recommend them: it warns that the fault can cause the engine to stop suddenly and asks for it to be repaired immediately. Mechanic Base classes it as medium severity and advises against driving: the car usually enters limp mode, stalling is unlikely but dangerous in fast traffic, and in the long run the engine can be damaged. AutoDTCs, on the other hand, rates it as moderate and says it normally does not leave you stranded. Since the sensor is the basis on which the ECU regulates fuel pressure, the prudent course is to make no more journeys than necessary and take it to a garage as soon as possible.[1][2][4][7]
