P0171 on BMW: causes and affected engines

P0171 means: system too lean (bank 1): the air-fuel mixture has too much air or too little fuel.[1][2] BMW has 7 documented faults that can trigger it, across 5 engines, including BMW N54/N55, BMW N52 / N53, BMW N43/N46 and BMW N13. Only a diagnosis can confirm the cause on your car.

Documented faults in BMW engines that can trigger P0171

Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the fuel pump and with the injectors: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.

Common causes of P0171 on any make

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Air leaks in the intake: cracked or loose vacuum hoses or sleeves, manifold gasket, or boost pipe on turbo engines. This is the most common cause: air that enters after the mass air flow sensor is not measured and the ECU cannot compensate.[1][2][3][4][5]
  2. 2Dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor (MAF), which measures the incoming air incorrectly.[1][2][3][4][5]
  3. 3Low fuel pressure: weak pump, clogged fuel filter or faulty regulator.[1][2][3][4][5]
  4. 4Clogged, contaminated or leaking injectors.[1][3][5]

What to check first

The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1Do a visual inspection in the engine bay: air filter box properly closed, intake hose without cracks, vacuum hoses connected and unbroken.[2]
  2. 2Read the code with a diagnostic tool and check whether any other associated codes are stored.[4]
  3. 3Watch the short-term and long-term fuel trims live, at idle and at higher revs. High positive values confirm the lean mixture (the sources give different thresholds: above +10% or +15-20%). If the trim rises a lot at idle and drops as revs rise, an air leak is most likely; if at idle it is near zero and rises at higher revs, suspect the mass air flow sensor, a blocked catalytic converter or low fuel pressure.[2][3][6]

Frequently asked questions

Which BMW engines have faults that can trigger P0171?

BMW N54/N55 (2 faults), BMW N52 / N53 (1 fault), BMW N43/N46 (1 fault), BMW N13 (2 faults) and BMW N20 (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.

What does code P0171 mean on a BMW?

System too lean (bank 1): the air-fuel mixture has too much air or too little fuel. The ECU adjusts the amount of fuel according to what the lambda sensor measures in the exhaust (this is called mixture adjustment or "fuel trim"). If the sensor detects too much oxygen, the ECU adds fuel; when it reaches the maximum it can add and there is still excess oxygen, it stores P0171. Put another way: more air is entering than the ECU thinks, or less fuel than needed is arriving, and it can no longer compensate. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a BMW as on any other make.[1][2][7][8]

Can I keep driving with P0171?

Garage soon. The sources agree that it is not an emergency, although not on the degree of risk. Autodoc Club considers it a minor fault that poses no particular risk to the driver, and MechanicBase accepts short journeys to the garage. But Samarins warns that a lean mixture raises combustion temperature and, over time, can damage the engine; MechanicBase warns that continuing to ignore it can damage internal parts, and adds that the code may be the first warning of something about to fail, such as a clogged fuel filter or a weak pump. It is best to repair it rather than let it go.[1][2][4]
