2.5 TDI R5 engine: faults and reliability
Volkswagen 2.5 TDI de cinco cilindros (R5) · Volkswagen
Which 2.5 TDI R5 versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- Avoid
2.5 TDI 130 and 174 hp (AXD, AXE, 2003-2006)
2003–2006 · 130–174 hp · AXD, AXE
Autobild recommends choosing a late 2.5 TDI because of the faults on the first units.[1]
- With caution
2.5 TDI 130 and 174 hp with DPF (BNZ, BPC, 2006-2009)
2006–2009 · 130–174 hp · BNZ, BPC
Autobild says the later series corrected most of the problems and many exceed 300,000 km.[1]
- With caution
2.5 TDI common rail Crafter (88 to 163 hp, 2006-2011)
2006–2011 · 88–163 hp
The source cites turbo failures corrected with a 2010 redesign; more reliability data is needed.[6]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 2.5 TDI R5
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockPlasma coating flaking off the cylindersOn the 2.5 TDI the plasma layer on the cylinder walls can flake off and destroy the engine. Autobild links it to the first units and to unsuitable oils; the later ones were more reliable.
- 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockCamshaft and hydraulic tappet wearThe camshaft and tappets of the five-cylinder 2.5 TDI wear, especially if the oil is dirty because the filter was not changed on time. It is one of the engine's expensive faults: up to four or five figures in Germany.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionLeaks and play in the unit injectorsThe unit injectors (Pumpe-Düse) on the 2.5 TDI are fixed on one side only in the cylinder head and over time seat badly; they can lose their seal and let diesel into the oil. There is a specific repair kit.
- 4Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalClutchDual-mass flywheel wearThe dual-mass flywheel on the T5's 2.5 TDI can wear: rattling and vibrations. Torque Cars calls it an expensive repair, without giving a price.
- 5Low severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with carbonThe 2.5 TDI's EGR valve can clog with carbon and trigger engine management warnings. It is a common fault on the T5 diesels, but without frequency figures.

What the 2.5 TDI R5 is
A 2,461 cc inline five-cylinder diesel with unit injectors, in the T5 with 130 and 174 hp and in the Touareg I with 163 and 174 hp. It is not Audi's V6 2.5 TDI.[4][5]
In the T5 there were the AXD/AXE (2003-2006) and the BNZ/BPC with particulate filter (2006-2009). The Crafter I used a common rail 2.5 TDI of 88 to 163 hp between 2006 and 2011. The CFCA is a 180 hp 2.0 BiTDI, not a 2.5.[4][6][7]
