2.5 dCi YD25 engine: faults and reliability

Nissan 2.5 dCi (YD25DDTi) · Nissan

The 2.5 dCi YD25 in the Navara D40 and Pathfinder R51 is tough, but it has one documented weak point: the lower timing chain, whose failure can destroy the engine. Check its condition, as well as the EGR and the turbo.[1][2][3]

Which 2.5 dCi YD25 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.5 dCi YD25 is

The YD25DDTi is a 2.5-litre (2,488 cc) four-cylinder diesel with an iron block, aluminium head, an intercooled variable-geometry turbo and common rail direct injection.[4]

In Europe it went from around 144 hp to 174 hp and reached 190 hp with the 2010 update, with up to 450 Nm of torque. It was fitted to the Navara D40 and the Pathfinder R51, among other Nissan models.[4][5]

The sources consulted agree on the timing chain as the weak point, although they also say that, with good maintenance, the engine can exceed 300,000 km. The Navara's chassis problems are independent of the engine.[1][2][3]
