Which TDV6 / SDV6 versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
2.7 TDV6 (276DT/DT17, 2004-2010)
2004–2010 · 190–200 hp · 276DT, DT17
You need to verify that the belt and oil pump have been replaced with the improved part.[3][5]
- With caution
3.0 TDV6/SDV6 (306DT, 2009-2018)
2009–2018 · 245–292 hp · 306DT
Worth buying with an oil service history and no main bearing noises.[1][2]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the TDV6 / SDV6
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationCrankshaft breakage and spinning main bearing shellsOn the TDV6/SDV6 in the Discovery 3 and 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, crankshaft failures have been documented caused by main bearing shells that are badly seated or that spin; the engine can seize and needs replacing or rebuilding.
- 2Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingBroken oil pump housing and timing belt jumping on the 2.7On the 2.7 TDV6 the belt tensioner is bolted to the oil pump housing; if that part gives way, the belt jumps and the engine, an interference design, can be destroyed. Specialists fit the improved pump along with the belt.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbo and pneumatic actuator failure on the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6On the 3.0 sequential twin-turbo the most common fault is the secondary turbo's pneumatic actuator, which causes limp mode and lack of power; turbo wear also occurs.
