2.0 HDi vs 2.0 BlueHDi: which engine is more reliable?
According to our risk index, the 2.0 BlueHDi carries less risk than the 2.0 HDi: 45/100 (moderate risk) versus 55/100 (high risk). The 2.0 HDi has 2 documented serious faults, the main one being «Variable-geometry turbo failures (actuator, sensors and clogging)»; the 2.0 BlueHDi has 2 documented serious faults, the main one being «DPF clogging on short journeys».
The index (0–100) weights the severity and frequency of the three most serious documented faults. How it is calculated
Is the 2.0 HDi reliable?
It is a robust diesel in its simplest 90 hp version, but the 136 to 140 hp generation with a DPF (2004-2011) concentrates the engine's problems: turbo, DPF, EGR and, above all, a dual-mass flywheel that fails very often. The BlueHDi engines (from 2013) are mechanically more reliable, but add an AdBlue tank that can crystallise; the OCU (Spanish consumer organisation) has reported this fault in Spain and Stellantis covers it with a compensation programme.[1][2][3][4]
See the 5 of the 2.0 HDi faultsIs the 2.0 BlueHDi reliable?
The 2.0 BlueHDi is mechanically one of the sturdiest PSA/Stellantis diesels: in the samples available for its 150 to 180 hp versions, the turbo, DPF, EGR and injectors fail noticeably less often than on earlier generations of the same engine from before 2013. Its documented weak point is the AdBlue tank, a fault so widespread that Stellantis compensates affected owners without a definitive fix.[1][2][5][6]
