P0463 on Renault: causes and affected models
Documented Renault faults that can trigger P0463
Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the fuel pump and with the instrument cluster: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.
1.3 TCe
In Arkana, Austral, Captur II, Clio V, Kadjar, Kangoo III and 2 more models
1.5 dCi
In Clio II, Clio III, Kangoo I, Kangoo II, Mégane II, Mégane III and 4 more models
Common causes of P0463 on any make
From most to least likely, according to the sources.
- 1Level sensor (float resistor) open or corroded inside the pump module, the most common cause according to AutoDTCs.[1][2]
- 2Float arm bent, broken or stuck, so that the wiper loses contact.[1]
- 3Signal wire open or chafed between the sensor and the ECU or cluster.[1][2]
- 4Loose or corroded connector at the pump module or at a splice.[1][2]
What to check first
The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.
- 1With a diagnostic tool, read the fuel level value and compare it with the fuel actually in the tank.[1]
- 2Inspect the pump module connector (usually under the rear seat) for corrosion or pushed-in pins and wiggle the wiring while watching the live value.[1]
- 3Check the continuity of the signal wire to the ECU or cluster.[1]
Frequently asked questions
Which Renault models have faults that can trigger P0463?
1.3 TCe (1 fault), 1.5 dCi (1 fault), Renault Scénic II (1 fault) and Renault Laguna III (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.
What does code P0463 mean on a Renault?
Fuel level sensor "A" circuit: high input. The ECU has read a voltage above its normal range from fuel level sensor "A" for a period of time. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Renault as on any other make.[1][2]
Can I keep driving with P0463?
Monitor. It does not damage the engine, but an unreliable gauge can leave you without fuel: refuel soon and keep track of the kilometres. It keeps the warning light on and may fail the emissions test.[1]
