P0101 on Audi: causes and affected engines

P0101 means: mass or volume air flow sensor circuit: range or performance problem (the signal is outside the expected range).[1][2][3] Audi has 5 documented faults that can trigger it, across 5 engines, including 1.9 TDI, 1.4 TDI, 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI. Only a diagnosis can confirm the cause on your car.

Documented faults in Audi engines that can trigger P0101

Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the EGR valve: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.

Common causes of P0101 on any make

From most to least likely, according to the sources.

  1. 1Dirty, contaminated or faulty air flow meter: dust, a leaf or the oil from a soaked filter on the measuring element is enough to distort the measurement.[1][2][3][4]
  2. 2Air or vacuum leaks in the intake downstream of the air flow meter: cracked, split or disconnected hose, leaking manifold gaskets or a PCV valve stuck open.[1][2][3][4][5]
  3. 3Blocked or incorrectly fitted air filter, or a performance-type or oil-soaked filter that sheds fibres or oil onto the sensor.[2][3][4]
  4. 4Blocked catalytic converter or restricted exhaust.[1][3][4]

What to check first

The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.

  1. 1Check the air flow meter and, if it is dirty, clean it with a cleaner made specifically for air flow meters (never with brake cleaner or carburettor cleaner): a leaf or dust on the measuring element is enough to set this code.[2][3]
  2. 2If the problem began shortly after changing the air filter, check that it is fitted properly, and replace it if it is blocked; on some cars (VW, for example) there is also a metal mesh before the filter that can clog too.[1][2][3]
  3. 3Inspect the intake hose between the air flow meter and the throttle or turbo (cracks, tears, loose clips) and look for other possible air or vacuum leaks. Samarins says the cracked hose is a common problem on many European cars, and Ross-Tech warns that on turbo engines a leak between the air flow meter and the turbo inlet can set this code without any boost pressure leak (it cites this on the second-generation 2.0 T, engine CCTA).[1][2][3][4]

Frequently asked questions

Which Audi engines have faults that can trigger P0101?

1.9 TDI (1 fault), 1.4 TDI (1 fault), 1.6 TDI (1 fault), 2.0 TDI (1 fault) and 3.0 TDI V6 (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.

What does code P0101 mean on a Audi?

Mass or volume air flow sensor circuit: range or performance problem (the signal is outside the expected range). The engine ECU has detected that the air flow meter (MAF sensor) signal is outside the expected range: the air measurement it receives does not match what it should be, so the fault is in the sensor itself or in something that alters the air reaching it. This matters because the ECU uses it to calculate the fuel it injects and the engine load. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Audi as on any other make.[1][2][3][4]

Can I keep driving with P0101?

Garage soon. Autodoc considers it moderately urgent and warns that, depending on the symptoms, driving can sometimes be dangerous; Carista classes it as medium severity. Samarins lists stalling and difficulty starting among the symptoms, so it is best checked soon, especially if the engine stalls or loses responsiveness.[1][2][3]
