2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) engine: faults and reliability
Stellantis 2.2 MultiJet 3 / 2.2 BlueHDi (Ducato, Boxer, Jumper, Movano; 2019 en adelante) · Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Toyota
The 2.2 diesels of Stellantis's large vans (BlueHDi DW12 in the Boxer, Jumper and Movano; Multijet 3 in the Ducato) are recent engines with no fault statistics of their own. What is documented are campaigns: AdBlue and SCR software, and the fuel return pipe on 2024-2025 units, with a fire risk. Long-term history is missing.[1][2][3][4][5]
Which 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
2.2 BlueHDi 120/140/165 (DW12 RU, Euro 6d, Boxer and Jumper 2019-2023, Movano C 2021-2023)
2019–2023 · 120–165 hp · DW12 RU
We have found no mechanical faults of its own in open sources, but Safety Gate records a software update because the warning light may not come on if the urea injector fails (Boxer and Jumper 2020-2022, Movano 2021-2022). It can be bought if the VIN confirms the update has been done.[2][10][11][12]
- With caution
2.2 Multijet 3 H3-Power 120/140/160/180 (Ducato, Euro 6d-Final, 2021-2023)
2021–2023 · 120–180 hp · 46349131, 46348913
We have found no engine campaigns specific to this version, but no long-term reliability data either (a German motorhome guide admits as much), and the ADAC cites the Ducato registered in 2021 and 2023 among the vans with the worst results, without distinguishing engine. Demand the belt history: Haynes gives 144,000 km or 60 months, and 60,000 km or 36 months in severe use.[1][13][14]
- With caution
2.2 Multijet Euro 6e 120/140/160/180 (Ducato, Boxer, Jumper, Movano C and Proace Max, 2024 onwards)
since 2024 · 120–180 hp
It is the newest version and has no usage history. Units built between November 2024 and July 2025 are covered by the fuel return pipe recall, with a fire risk, and you need to confirm with the VIN that it has been done.[3][4][5]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis)
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityRareFrequency: RareFuelUnvulcanised fuel return pipe: fuel leak and fire riskStellantis is recalling Ducato, Boxer, Jumper and Movano vans built between November 2024 and July 2025: the fuel return pipe is not vulcanised and can come away from the valve and drip onto hot parts. It is precautionary and no fire has been reported.
- 2Low severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlAdBlue (SCR) system: the warning light may not come on if the urea doser failsStellantis is correcting with software a fault whereby the warning light may not come on if the AdBlue urea injector stops working (Boxer, Jumper and Movano 2020-2022) or if the SCR diagnostics fail. The declared risk is to emissions, not safety.

What the 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) is
Under the "2.2" label there are two different large-van diesels. The 2.2 BlueHDi (DW12 RU, 120, 140 and 165 hp, Euro 6d) replaced the 2.0 BlueHDi in the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper in 2019, and the 2021 Opel Movano C uses a 2.2 diesel of 88 to 121 kW. The 2.2 Multijet 3 (2,184 cc, 120, 140, 160 and 180 hp, Euro 6d-Final) arrived in the Fiat Ducato in 2021 as a new engine, in place of Iveco's 2.3; Autopos states that it is not a revision of the DW12 and German-language Wikipedia derives it from the 2.2 of the Jeep Wrangler.[6][7][8][9][15]
The split is not that clean. Techni and English-language Wikipedia place a DW12 version in the Ducato from April 2023, and since 2024 the Ducato, Boxer, Jumper, Movano and Toyota Proace Max use the 2,184 cc 2.2 in Euro 6e form, with 120, 140 and 180 hp; German-language Wikipedia calls it Multijet4. The 160 hp Ducato was withdrawn in 2022 and returned to the range in 2026 for motorhomes.[7][16][17][18]
According to Autopos, the 2.2 Multijet 3 is an in-line four-cylinder with a cast-iron block, aluminium head, 16 valves, twin overhead camshafts, timing belt and turbo, with a DOC, particulate filter, SCR with AdBlue and high- and low-pressure EGR. For the Ducato 2.2 H3-Power, Haynes gives a belt change every 144,000 km or 60 months in normal use and every 60,000 km or 36 months in severe use.[8][14]
It is a recent engine and open information is scarce: a German motorhome guide admits there is no reliable long-term data on the 2.2 Multijet 3, and the ADAC includes the Ducato registered in 2021 and 2023 among the vans with the worst results in its 2025 breakdown statistics, without separating by engine. What is documented are official campaigns: the AdBlue and SCR software and, in 2026, the fuel return pipe on 2024-2025 units.[1][2][3][13]

What changed between versions
2019–2023
2.2 BlueHDi 120/140/165 (DW12 RU, Euro 6d, Boxer and Jumper 2019-2023, Movano C 2021-2023)
The DW12 RU is the Euro 6d version of PSA's 2.2 for vans: it replaces the 2.0 BlueHDi DW10 FU in the Citroën Jumper and Peugeot Boxer from 2019 and delivers 120 hp (300 Nm), 140 hp (340 Nm) and 165 hp (370 Nm); German-language Wikipedia gives 310 Nm for the 120 hp. The 2021 Opel Movano C uses a 2.2 diesel of 88 to 121 kW. Techni and English-language Wikipedia place a DW12 version in the Ducato from April 2023.[6][7][9][16][17]
2021–2023
2.2 Multijet 3 H3-Power 120/140/160/180 (Ducato, Euro 6d-Final, 2021-2023)
New 2,184 cc engine that replaced Iveco's 2.3 in the Ducato with 120, 140, 160 and 180 hp (Euro 6d-Final, with up to 7% less CO2). It has SCR with AdBlue, high- and low-pressure EGR and a timing belt, and is not a revision of PSA's DW12. German-language Wikipedia makes it a derivative of the Jeep Wrangler's 2.2 and dates the withdrawal of the 160 hp to 2022. The Ducato manual gives engine codes 46349131 (120 and 140 hp) and 46348913 (160 and 180 hp).[7][8][15][19]
since 2024
2.2 Multijet Euro 6e 120/140/160/180 (Ducato, Boxer, Jumper, Movano C and Proace Max, 2024 onwards)
Since 2024, English-language Wikipedia places the 2,184 cc Euro 6e 2.2 with 120, 140 and 180 hp in the four Sevel vans and the Toyota Proace Max; the German edition calls it Multijet4 and reduces the automatic from nine to eight speeds. The 160 hp, withdrawn in 2022, returned to the range in 2026 for motorhomes with 380 Nm (400 Nm with the automatic).[7][17][18]
