AL4 / DP0 gearbox: faults and reliability

PSA-Renault AL4 / DP0 (caja automática de 4 velocidades) · Peugeot, Citroën and Renault

The AL4 (Peugeot and Citroën) and the DP0 (Renault) are the same 4-speed automatic gearbox, developed jointly by both groups and presented in 1998 to replace the old ZF 4HP20. It was fitted for more than a decade across much of both manufacturers' compact and mid-size ranges. As with any automatic gearbox, degraded oil or a low oil level causes harsh shifts and slipping.[1][2][3][4]

Which AL4 / DP0 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • With caution

It is an old design (late 1990s) that is no longer in production; we have not found specific documentation of faults unique to the AL4, but given its age and the general pattern of any automatic gearbox with infrequent oil maintenance, you should check the service history before buying.[3][4]

  • DP0 (Renault)

    since 1999 · DP0

    With caution

It shares the same basic design as the AL4, with the same doubts: it has been a discontinued gearbox for years, and without specific documentation of faults of its own you should verify the maintenance history before buying.[3][4]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the AL4 / DP0 is

The AL4 is a 4-speed automatic gearbox that Peugeot introduced in March 1998 on the 406 for the 2-litre engines, replacing the old ZF 4HP20 that PSA models had used until then. It was a gearbox developed jointly by PSA and Renault to reduce both groups' dependence on the supplier ZF; in the versions fitted by Renault it is internally identified by the code DP0, although mechanically it shares the same hydraulic operating principle, with torque converter and electronic control, as PSA's AL4.[1]

Over the years it spread to a good part of the compact and mid-size ranges of Peugeot, Citroën and Renault, also replacing the Autoactive automatic gearbox that, for example, the Citroën Xantia used. At Peugeot and Citroën it was sold under the generic name "BVA" (boîte de vitesses automatique), and it was built, among other plants, at the group's factory in Valenciennes (France).[5][6]

We have not found an end-of-production year confirmed by an independent source: the last application we have been able to document with this gearbox is the Renault Clio III, sold until 2012. We treat the AL4/DP0 as a discontinued gearbox, found today only in the used-car fleet.[7]

What changed between versions

  1. since 1998

AL4 (PSA — Peugeot and Citroën)

The designation used by Peugeot and Citroën for this 4-speed automatic gearbox, introduced in 1998 to replace the ZF 4HP20. PSA sold it generically as "BVA" in its compact and mid-size range (206, 207, C3, C4, Xsara Picasso, among others).[1][6]

  2. since 1999

    DP0 (Renault)

The internal code Renault uses for the same gearbox developed jointly with PSA; the earliest source we have been able to date is its availability on the Renault Kangoo from December 1999. We have not found a source that explicitly uses the abbreviation "DP0" outside the designation already established for this file, so we treat it as the usual name on the Renault side without being able to cite it independently.[1][8]
