1.5 VTi-TECH / T-GDI engine: faults and reliability

MG / SAIC 1.5 VTi-TECH atmosférico and 1.5 T-GDI turbo (familia SGE) · MG

MG/SAIC's "1.5" covers two different engines: the naturally aspirated VTi-TECH (106 hp), the entry-level engine in the MG ZS, and the turbocharged T-GDI (162-170 hp), found only in the MG HS and as the petrol engine in its plug-in hybrids. Neither has well-documented engine faults in independent sources yet: the complaints published concern electronics, the automatic gearbox and finish, not the engine block.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Which 1.5 VTi-TECH / T-GDI versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • We have not found any documented engine faults, either in the press or in the owner testimonials we consulted; it is a simple naturally aspirated engine with no turbo. The caution is that the available data is thin: only four reviews on the reliability website consulted.[4]

  • 1.5 T-GDI turbo 162 hp (GS61H, 2018-2024)

    2018–2024 · 162 hp · GS61H

    With caution

No engine faults (turbo, injection, oil) are documented yet, but there are isolated complaints about electronics and jerky automatic gearbox shifts when cold; in addition, the reliability website consulted has no testimonials on this engine. Try the gearbox from cold and check the history before buying.[5][6]

  • 1.5 T-GDI turbo 170 hp (15FDE / 15FKE, from 2024)

    since 2024 · 170 hp · 15FDE, 15FKE

    With caution

This generation is too recent (since July 2024) for published reliability data; the same caution applies as for the first generation, as it shares the architecture and the automatic gearbox.[2]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 1.5 VTi-TECH / T-GDI is

MG's 1.5 belongs to the SGE ("Small Gasoline Engine") family, designed by Opel within General Motors' parts bin and built in China by SAIC, MG Motor's parent company, since 2013. Two engines of different architecture share that base: a naturally aspirated four-cylinder with direct injection, sold as the VTi-TECH (code NSE, later NSE Plus), and a turbocharged four-cylinder, also with direct injection, sold as the T-GDI (GS61H family).[1][2][8][9]

The VTi-TECH powers the MG ZS as the entry-level option, with 106 hp and 141 Nm on the British market and a manual or automatic gearbox. The T-GDI, by contrast, is found only in the MG HS: a first generation of 162 hp and 250 Nm (2018-2024) and, since July 2024, a second generation of 170 hp and 275 Nm; it comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed wet dual-clutch. The 1.5 T-GDI is also the petrol engine of the MG HS PHEV (eHS), which adds an electric motor and a battery of up to 24.7 kWh. This page does not cover the three-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI that the ZS uses in some markets, as it is a different engine.[1][2][7]

The generation of the MG ZS with the VTi-TECH (2017-2024) was later followed by a ZS Hybrid+ with a different engine and up to 194 hp, which is outside the scope of this page.[10]

The petrol MG HS reached the United Kingdom in November 2019, Italy in September 2022 and Germany (fleets only) in April 2023. As relatively recent models in Europe with lower volumes than the mainstream brands, there is still little independent information (workshops, motoring clubs, reliability studies) on their long-term behaviour: the French website Fiches-Auto has no owner testimonials on the eHS and only four on each petrol ZS engine.[4][5][7]

What changed between versions

  1. since 2017

    1.5 VTi-TECH naturally aspirated 106 hp (NSE / NSE Plus, from 2017)

Entry-level petrol engine of the MG ZS: inline four-cylinder, no turbo, direct injection. On the British market it produces 106 hp (78 kW) and 141 Nm; in China, with a different calibration, up to 120 hp. It is paired with a manual or automatic gearbox depending on version and market.[1][3]

  2. 2018–2024

    1.5 T-GDI turbo 162 hp (GS61H, 2018-2024)

First generation of the MG HS petrol turbo: four cylinders, 1,490 cc, direct injection, 162 hp (119 kW) and 250 Nm between 1,500 and 4,400 rpm. 6-speed manual or 7-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox; it is also the petrol engine of the first-generation HS PHEV (258 hp combined, 16.6 kWh battery).[2][7]

  3. since 2024

    1.5 T-GDI turbo 170 hp (15FDE / 15FKE, from 2024)

Second generation, with displacement slightly increased to 1,496 cc: 170 hp (125 kW) and 275 Nm between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm. It keeps the 6-speed manual or the 7-speed dual-clutch; the code 15FKE identifies the version used in the HS PHEV.[2][7]
