MZR-CD engine: faults and reliability
Mazda MZR-CD 2.0/2.2 (RF, R2) · Mazda
The MZR-CD is Mazda's most widespread diesel between 2002 and 2013, fitted to the Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda5 and CX-7. It is sensitive to short journeys: the injector seals and incomplete DPF regenerations can dilute the oil, and the EGR and intake build up carbon. The 2.2-litre redesign (from 2008), with a timing chain instead of a belt, adds the risk of that chain stretching and damaging the engine.[1][2][3][4]
Which MZR-CD versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
2.0 MZR-CD 121-143 (RF, 2002-2005, no DPF)
2002–2005 · 121–143 hp · RF
It is the oldest version of the family (over 20 years old in 2026) and shares with the rest the sensitivity to oil dilution and carbon build-up documented by fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de, although without a particulate filter as yet. A reasonable buy if you check the service history.[1][3][10]
- With caution
2.0 MZR-CD 105-143 (RF, 2005-2010, with DPF)
2005–2010 · 105–143 hp · RF
The particulate filter adds sensitivity to short journeys (incomplete regeneration and oil dilution), documented by fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de on the Mazda6 and Mazda3 of these years; we have found no equivalent reports for the Mazda5 with this engine, although it shares the same design.[1][3][10][11]
- With caution
2.2 MZR-CD 125-185 (R2, 2008-2013)
2008–2013 · 125–185 hp · R2
It retains the 2.0's sensitivity to oil dilution and carbon build-up, and adds a problem of its own: fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de independently document timing chain stretch as a known weak point on the Mazda6 and Mazda3. Check that there is no chain noise when cold and review the service history.[2][4][12][13]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the MZR-CD
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1Critical severityCommonFrequency: CommonTimingTiming chain stretch on the 2.2 MZR-CDThe 2.2-litre redesign (2008-2013) replaced the 2.0's belt with a timing chain that, according to fiches-auto.fr and gebrauchtwagenberater.de, stretches more than expected on the Mazda6 and Mazda3, and, being the same engine, presumably on the CX-7 too; a rattle when cold is the first warning.
- 2High severityCommonFrequency: CommonLubricationOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
- 3High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalTurboTurbocharger wear or failureThe MZR-CD's variable-geometry turbo appears among the faults cited by Mazda6 and Mazda3 owners, with cases of whistling, loss of boost pressure and, in one documented case, a repair of over €3,600 in France; it tends to be made worse if the oil has previously been diluted.
- 4Medium severityCommonFrequency: CommonIntakeCarbon on the injectors, EGR valve and intakeUrban use and short journeys encourage carbon to build up on the injectors, EGR valve and intake of the MZR-CD, with loss of power and jerking; documented on the Mazda6 and Mazda3, on both the 2.0 and the 2.2.

What the MZR-CD is
Mazda presented the 2.0 MZR-CD in February 2002 with the launch of the Mazda6 (GG), as an evolution of the RF diesel block the brand had used since the 1990s, now with Denso common rail injection (1,800 bar); it is a 1,998 cc four-cylinder with a variable-geometry turbo and belt-driven timing. The Mazda3 (BK) adopted it at its launch in 2003.[5][6][7]
From mid-2005 the diesel particulate filter (DPF) became standard on all diesel versions (on the Mazda6 in September, on the Mazda3 in June), with a second generation of the Denso common rail system and multiple injection. That same year Mazda launched the Mazda5 (CR) with the same 2.0 MZR-CD in two power outputs (105 and 143 hp).[6][7][8]
In 2008 Mazda redesigned the engine as a 2.2-litre (R2 family): it increased the displacement to 2,184 cc, switched from a belt to a timing chain, raised the injection pressure to 2,000 bar with 10-hole injectors and adopted a twin-cam cylinder head. This 2.2 powered the Mazda6 (GH) from late 2008 and the Mazda3 (BL) from 2009, and debuted in 2009 in the CX-7, where it added an SCR system with AdBlue to meet the Euro 5 standard.[5][6][7][9]

What changed between versions
2002–2005
2.0 MZR-CD 121-143 (RF, 2002-2005, no DPF)
First generation of the MZR-CD: 1,998 cc, Denso common rail at 1,800 bar, variable-geometry turbo and belt-driven timing. It debuted in the Mazda6 (GG) in February 2002 with 121 hp and reached the Mazda3 (BK) in 2003 in a 143 hp tune; neither version had a particulate filter yet.[5][6][7]
2005–2010
2.0 MZR-CD 105-143 (RF, 2005-2010, with DPF)
From mid-2005 (June on the Mazda3, September on the Mazda6) the particulate filter became standard, with a second generation of the Denso common rail system and multiple injection. With this tune, Mazda launched the Mazda5 (CR) in late 2005 with the same 2.0 in 105 and 143 hp, and in 2008 briefly offered a 140 hp version in the new Mazda6 (GH) before replacing it with the 2.2 later that year.[5][6][7][8]
2008–2013
2.2 MZR-CD 125-185 (R2, 2008-2013)
2008 redesign: displacement increased to 2,184 cc, chain-driven timing instead of a belt, injection pressure of up to 2,000 bar with 10-hole injectors and a twin-cam cylinder head. It powered the Mazda6 (GH) from late 2008, the Mazda3 (BL) from 2009 and, from 2009, the CX-7, where it added an SCR system with AdBlue to meet the Euro 5 standard.[5][6][7][9]
