2.3 MultiJet engine: faults and reliability

Fiat/Iveco 2.3 MultiJet (F1A / F1AE) · Fiat and Iveco

The 2.3 MultiJet (F1A) in the Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily has few faults with a solid source: the best documented are three campaigns on the 2016-2019 Euro 6 Ducato (intercooler hose, EGR pipe and camshaft). Owners and garages also cite EGR, throttle body, injectors and AdBlue, almost always on forums or commercial websites, with no statistics.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Which 2.3 MultiJet versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • First-batch 2.3 Multijet / HPI (F1AE0481, 2006-2011)

    2006–2011 · 97–136 hp · F1AE0481D, F1AE0481N, F1AE0481F, F1AE0481G, F1AE0481H

    With caution

These are the oldest units and we have found no reliable campaigns or fault statistics. Insist on the timing belt history (a Daily IV sheet gives 240,000 km or 5 years) and check the injectors, EGR and throttle body, which are the points cited by data sheets and forums.[5][11]

  • 2.3 Multijet II Euro 5 (F1AE3481, 2010-2016)

    2010–2016 · 106–150 hp · F1AE3481G, F1AE3481D, F1AE3481E

    With caution

We have found no campaigns or documented cases specific to this version. Forums describe EGR and throttle body blocked by moisture and carbon deposits (the case we cite is from a 2007 Ducato) and an industry technical guide warns that a faulty EGR causes hesitation and an uneven idle, but no source distinguishes versions. It can be bought with a prior diagnostic scan and a check of the throttle body and EGR.[5][12]

  • With caution

It concentrates the documented campaigns (intercooler hose, EGR pipe and camshaft) and owners cite limp mode with EGR codes. It is a reasonable buy if the chassis number confirms the campaigns have been done and the diagnostic scan is clean.[1][2][3][6]

  • With caution

We have found no engine campaigns, but the garage we consulted points to the AdBlue system as the most common warning on these vans (crystallised urea, NOx sensor). Have the SCR and NOx sensor checked with a diagnostic scan before buying.[7]

  • With caution

The British DVSA records Daily campaigns from 2016-2019 for the particulate filter, NOx and injection, but does not say whether they affect the 2.3 or the 3.0. Check the chassis number to find out which campaigns have been carried out.[3]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.3 MultiJet

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityRareFrequency: RareTimingCamshaft breakage due to a manufacturing defect (Ducato, 2016-2017)A small batch of Ducato built between December 2016 and February 2017 (239 units in the UK) had a camshaft that could break because of a production error. The Australian press places the defect in the 2.3 Multijet and speaks of the engine stopping suddenly.
  2. 2Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve and throttle body clogged by carbon deposits and moistureThe 2.3's EGR and intake throttle body clog up with carbon, soot and, in the throttle body, moisture: the engine goes into limp mode, loses power and shows an EGR warning. On the dual-EGR Euro 6, the low-pressure cooler is added to the list. Almost all of this comes from forums and commercial websites.
  3. 3Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalInjectionLeaking or underperforming common-rail injectorsThere are signs of leaking or underperforming injectors on the 2.3: a French sheet on the Daily IV cites leaks at the injector wells and a 2021 British campaign for the 2016-2019 Daily replaces the filter and checks the injectors. Reliable statistics are lacking and there is no campaign for the Ducato.
  4. 4Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlAdBlue (SCR) system faults and a saturated particulate filter on the Euro 6On the 2.3 Euro 6d with AdBlue, a German garage cites warnings caused by crystallised urea, aged fluid or the NOx sensor that end in limp mode or a no-start lockout; a commercial website adds that the particulate filter becomes saturated with short journeys. These are qualitative sources.
  5. 5Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalIntakeIntercooler hose coming off the intake throttle bodyOn the 2016 to 2019 Ducato 2.3 Euro 6, the hose connecting the intercooler to the intake throttle body could come off: the engine warning light comes on and power is lost. Fiat corrected it with two recall campaigns that replace the seal or the clamps.
  6. 6High severityRareFrequency: RareEmissions controlFractured EGR pipe with a risk of short circuit and fireOn some Euro 6 Ducato built between February 2016 and September 2017, the EGR pipe could break and touch the alternator, with a risk of short circuit, loss of battery voltage and, according to the European alert, fire. Fiat checked it in a preventive campaign.

What the 2.3 MultiJet is

The 2.3 MultiJet is a four-cylinder diesel of 2,287 cm³, with 16 valves, common-rail injection and an intercooled turbo, from the Iveco/FPT F1A family (F1AE in the Ducato). It debuted in the second-generation Ducato around 2002 with 110 hp (F1AE0481C) and reached the Iveco Daily in 2003 under the commercial name HPI, with 95 and 116 hp. This page covers from 2006, the third-generation Ducato.[8][10]

In the third-generation Ducato it was offered with 120 and 130 hp (F1AE0481D and F1AE0481N); with the 2010-2011 Euro 5 update, with 110, 130 and 150 hp (F1AE3481G, D and E); from 2016, with 130 and 150 hp Euro 6; and around 2019-2020, with SCR and AdBlue at 120, 140 and 160 hp. At the end of 2021 the Ducato began to receive the 2.2 Multijet 3; we have not confirmed the exact date on which the 2.3 stopped being offered.[8][9]

In the Iveco Daily it was sold as the 2.3 HPI: 97, 116 and 136 hp in the Daily IV (2006-2011), 106, 126 and 145 hp Euro 5 in the Daily V (2011-2014) and 116, 136 and 156 hp in the 2020 data sheet. A French reliability sheet for the Daily IV lists the codes F1AE0481F, G and H and a timing belt interval of 240,000 km or 5 years.[10][11]

The Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper do not have this engine: Wikipedia's tables assign them the 2.2 HDi (Puma) in the third generation. In the Ducato, the 2.3 could be ordered with the six-speed Comfort-Matic automated gearbox: around 2012 Fiat extended it to the 130 and 148 hp versions of the 2.3 Multijet II Euro 5, when previously it was only offered with the 177 hp 3.0.[8][13]
