BMW N62 / N63 engine: faults and reliability

BMW V8 de gasolina N62 (atmosférico) and N63 (biturbo) · BMW

The N62 (naturally aspirated V8, 2001-2010) is considered a solid engine, with the coolant hoses and valve stem seals as points to watch. The N63 (twin-turbo V8, since 2008) has a worse reputation: oil consumption from the seals, the timing chain and coolant loss; the post-July 2013 N63TU is considered more reliable.[1][2][3][4][5]

Which BMW N62 / N63 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the BMW N62 / N63

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: CommonLubricationN63 oil consumption from worn valve stem sealsYes: the original N63 is known for using oil and the German press attributes it to worn valve stem seals. Gebrauchtwagenberater gives €3,000-4,500 as a repair reference in Germany.
  2. 2Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingN63 timing chain stretch and guide breakageOn the N63 the timing chain can stretch and the sliding guide can break, leaving plastic debris in the sump and risking serious engine damage. We have found no European recall for this reason.
  3. 3Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboAdditional turbo coolant pump with a risk of short circuit and fireIn 2011 BMW recalled 5, 6 and 7 Series, X5 and X6 models built between 2007 and 2011 because of the additional turbo coolant pump: moisture, a short circuit and, in extreme cases, a fire. In 2012 there was another campaign for a crack in the pump, with a more robust version.
  4. 4Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingN63 coolant loss and cracks in the cylinder headThe N63 loses coolant fairly often: Gebrauchtwagenberater cites it on the 550i, the X5 50i and others, along with cracks in the spark plug well. Owner reports add hoses and the water pump.
  5. 5Medium severityFrequency: CommonCoolingN62 coolant loss from hoses and the pipe between the cylinder banksOn the N62 V8, coolant loss from cracked hoses or pipes is typical, especially on the earliest units. Replacing them is laborious: the hose between the banks means removing a good part of the engine.
  6. 6Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationN62 blue smoke and oil consumption from hardened valve stem sealsOn the N62 V8, the valve stem seals can harden with age and cause oil consumption with blue smoke. It is not a widespread fault: several German guides describe the engine as solid.

What the BMW N62 / N63 is

The N62 is a 90-degree naturally aspirated petrol V8, built in Munich from 2001 to 2010 in 3.6 (N62B36), 4.0 (N62B40), 4.4 (N62B44) and 4.8-litre (N62B48) versions. It has an Alusil alloy block, four valves per cylinder, Valvetronic and VANOS. The N63 is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that replaced it from 2008, with the X6 xDrive50i as the first model.[6][7][8]

The N62 powered the 5 Series E60 (545i, 550i and, in Europe only, 540i), the 6 Series E63/E64 (645Ci and 650i), the 7 Series E65 (735i, 740i, 745i and 750i) and the X5 E53 (4.4i and 4.8is) and E70 (4.8i). Morgan and Wiesmann also used it, and Alpina supercharged it in its B5, B6 and B7.[6][8]

The N63 was fitted to the 7 Series F01/F02 (750i), the 5 Series F10 (550i) and the 5 GT F07, the 6 Series F12/F13/F06 (650i) and the X5 and X6 xDrive50i. In 2012 it received a technical revision (N63B44O1 or N63TU) that raised output from 408 to 450 hp and torque from 600 to 650 Nm; the 2016 and 2018 revisions arrived in the G series and are outside this page. Gebrauchtwagenberater recommends choosing a car built after July 2013.[3][7]

The European sources separate the two engines. Of the N62, Gebrauchtwagenberater speaks of solid engines in the 6 Series and the X5 E70, and a 100,000 km test of a 745i recorded no engine defects; among the weak points cited are the coolant hoses (Gebrauchtwagenberater and Auto Bild) and, to a lesser extent, the valve stem seals (Auto Bild and fiches-auto owner reports). Of the N63, the same guides cite oil consumption, a stretched chain and coolant loss.[1][2][3][4][5][9][12]
