Lexus CT problems (2010–2022)

The only engine of the Lexus CT that we have documented, the 1.8 Hybrid, has high or critical severity faults in the versions it is fitted to. Our verdict for the version it is fitted to: «With caution».[1][2]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the Lexus CT 200h has no documented in-service faults in the open sources we have read: the Spanish second-hand press describes a hybrid drivetrain without endemic faults and mentions the airbag campaign. What is on record are preventive campaigns: curtain airbags, fuel tank and evaporative emissions control unit, and the 2019 tailgate struts.[3][4][5][6][7]

Documented engine

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). We only show engines we have documented with sources: if yours does not appear, we have not analysed it yet. View all engines

    With caution

The engine itself is reliable, but cars with this version are already between 11 and 17 years old: check that the Prius III campaigns were carried out (brake actuator, hybrid system software) and inspect the condition of wear items (12 V battery, water pump, hybrid battery).[1][2]

Faults that affect the CT

Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The 1.8 Hybrid has 5 documented faults in total.

  1. Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsBrake actuator failure (hard pedal, loss of assistance)Yes, it is a documented fault on the Prius III: the diaphragm of the brake actuator's accumulator can degrade and make the pedal very hard, forcing you to brake with much more force. Toyota ran a campaign in 2013; there are also owner reports of actuators failing after the warranty had expired.
  2. Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsThe car loses drive or stalls because of a hybrid system fail-safe mode faultYes. Toyota acknowledged that, in the event of certain internal faults, the hybrid management computer on units built before 2014 might not correctly activate fail-safe mode, and the car would lose drive or stall while driving. It was fixed by software; reprogramming at an official dealer is free.
  3. High severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsInverter (IPM module) overheating and loss of driveYes. On units built between 2014 and 2016, the transistors in the inverter's power module can be damaged by thermal stress and cause loss of drive. Toyota ran a campaign in 2020; there are also inverters that have failed outside the campaign, with repairs of around €3,000.Repair: €3,000
  4. High severityFrequency: RareElectronicsDegradation or premature failure of the hybrid batteryIt is a component that generally lasts very well (there are units above 300,000 km), but there are isolated cases of premature failure, mainly on the Auris Hybrid, between 77,000 and 80,000 km, with repairs of around €2,800-3,000. We have not found a manufacturer campaign for this.Repair: €2,800–€3,000

Frequently asked questions

Is the Lexus CT reliable?

The only engine of the Lexus CT that we have documented, the 1.8 Hybrid, has high or critical severity faults in the versions it is fitted to. Our verdict for the version it is fitted to: «With caution». Outside the engine, the Lexus CT 200h has no documented in-service faults in the open sources we have read: the Spanish second-hand press describes a hybrid drivetrain without endemic faults and mentions the airbag campaign. What is on record are preventive campaigns: curtain airbags, fuel tank and evaporative emissions control unit, and the 2019 tailgate struts.

What problems does the Lexus CT have apart from the engine?

Outside the engine, the Lexus CT 200h has no documented in-service faults in the open sources we have read: the Spanish second-hand press describes a hybrid drivetrain without endemic faults and mentions the airbag campaign. What is on record are preventive campaigns: curtain airbags, fuel tank and evaporative emissions control unit, and the 2019 tailgate struts. The most important documented faults are: defective weld between the fuel tank and the filler pipe: leak and fire risk (airbags and safety, high severity), crack in the evaporative emissions control unit on the tank: leak when the tank is full (airbags and safety, high severity), airbag inflator for the curtain airbags with a possible micro-crack in the weld (airbags and safety, high severity) and tailgate gas struts with micro-cracks in the rod: they may fail to hold the tailgate open (bodywork and interior, medium severity).[3][4][5][6][7]

What faults does the Lexus CT have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: brake actuator failure (hard pedal, loss of assistance) (1.8 Hybrid, critical severity), the car loses drive or stalls because of a hybrid system fail-safe mode fault (1.8 Hybrid, critical severity), inverter (IPM module) overheating and loss of drive (1.8 Hybrid, high severity) and degradation or premature failure of the hybrid battery (1.8 Hybrid, high severity).

What is the best year to buy a Lexus CT?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2022, 2021, 2020 and 1 other years with the same rating (7.6/10); the worst rated is 2010 (6.0/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.

Does the Lexus CT have recalls?

Yes: we have documented 7 campaigns for the Lexus CT, such as safety Gate alert 44/2019: tailgate gas strut (2019). Check with your VIN at the official service centre whether yours has been done.[7]
