Electrical and electronic faults in the multiplex system in the Fiat Stilo
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency very frequent: Three independent sources agree on the scale of the problem: fiches-auto.fr documents recurring poor contacts in the multiplex system, French Wikipedia states that 'a large majority' of cars were affected by electronic faults after its launch in 2001, and Spanish Wikipedia notes that the vehicle's control units (CPUs), made by Visteon, suffered 'faults and errors'. As it is documented by several sources as a problem affecting a large share of cars, it is rated as very frequent.[1][2][3]
Symptoms
- Warning lights and messages that come on intermittently for no apparent reason, because of poor contacts in the wiring.[1]Electronic warnings: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Airbag warning light permanently on, often related to the electrical connection of the passenger seat.[1]Airbag light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The instrument cluster or radio switch off completely and restart by themselves.[1]Screen failure: other faults that cause it · Monitor
Why it happens
Recurring poor contacts in the Stilo's multiplex wiring, which cause everything from intermittent warning lights to the disconnection of sensors such as the engine speed/TDC sensor, which in some cases can stall the car while it is running.[1]
The vehicle's electronic control units (CPUs) were made by Visteon, a supplier that, according to Spanish Wikipedia, suffered 'faults and errors' when supplying several automotive groups.[2]
French Wikipedia records that 'a large majority' of Stilos reportedly suffered electronic faults (glitches) after the model's launch in 2001.[3]
If it is not repaired: As well as the annoyance of warning lights and displays that fail, the disconnection of sensors such as the engine speed sensor can cause the car to stall while running, according to the reports gathered.[1]
Affected years and cars
The Stilo was built in Europe between 2001 and 2007 (Brazilian production continued afterwards with its own changes), with around 769,000 cars built in total; the reports gathered do not distinguish between 3-door and 5-door bodies.[4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis of the multiplex circuit, cleaning or replacement of corroded connectors and, where applicable, repair of the affected wiring loom.[1]
We have not found a verified quote in Spain; the cost depends on whether the fault is in a single connector or requires checking several sections of the multiplex wiring.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- With the car running, move the accessible wiring looms under the seats and in the doors while watching the instrument cluster; a warning light that flickers when you move a wire reveals a poor contact.
- Check that the airbag warning light goes out after starting and does not come back on when you sit in the front passenger seat.
Parts needed

Wiring connectors and terminals
They join the different sections of the multiplex electrical loom; corrosion or dirt causes poor contacts.

How to prevent it
- At any intermittent warning light, check the connectors under the seats and in the doors as soon as possible, before the poor contact affects a critical sensor such as the engine speed sensor.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true that the Fiat Stilo has a lot of electrical problems?
Yes: it is one of the most repeated characteristics of this model. French Wikipedia states that a large majority of cars suffered electronic faults after launch in 2001, and both Spanish Wikipedia and owner reports point to the multiplex wiring and the control unit (made by Visteon) as the usual origin.[2][3]

- High severityFrequency: OccasionalSuspensionBreakage of the front suspension wishbones and springsThe Stilo's front suspension wishbones are described as a fragile part that breaks fairly often, and broken front springs are also reported.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTyres and wheelsPremature, uneven wear of the front tyresSome Stilo owners describe front tyres completely worn out in under 15,000 km despite gentle driving, with uneven wear as well.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalSteeringLoss of power steering assistanceThe Stilo's power steering can switch to a lower-assistance mode and become noticeably heavier, with cases reported at around 75,000 km.Appears at around 70,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalBodywork and interiorWater leaking through the sunroofThe Stilo's sunroof leaks water fairly often according to owner reports, usually because of a sealing problem or blocked drains.

- High severityFrequency: CommonPeugeot 408Electronic faults with the doors, boot and screen (suspected BSI control unit)In 2025 Peugeot recalled around 60,000 2023-2024 Peugeot 308 and 408 cars (code MUV) over a software fault in the door control unit that can cause unintended opening or closing and disable the anti-trap protection on the windows; 408 owners also describe a power boot lid that will not open or close and a screen that goes black.
- High severityFrequency: CommonRenault Laguna IIMultiplex electrical system and hands-free card faultsThe Laguna II had a reputation problem because of faults in its multiplexed electrical network: the hands-free card, the card reader and the ABS, ESP and handbrake warning lights came on erratically, especially in the early years of production (2001-2003).
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalMazda MX-5 IVDC/DC converter control unit fault with risk of short circuit and fireA 2018 Safety Gate alert covers MX-5 ND models built between August 2014 and April 2017: the DC converter control unit could fail, cause a short circuit and damage the converter, with a risk of fire. It is a precautionary recall; check the chassis number at the official service centre.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalMazda CX-60Incorrect software in the Dash-ESU and other control units of the hybrid CX-60Yes: two Safety Gate alerts from May 2025 (AR058A and AR056A) correct the software of several control units in hybrid CX-60s. With the hybrid system running, the demister, the seatbelt warning and the 360° camera may fail, and in the 'T3 M Hybrid Boost' variant the engine may stall at idle or fail to restart.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalMitsubishi ASX IOverheating of the engine control unit power relayThe relay that powers the engine control unit on 2015 ASX cars can overheat and fail; the power supply is then cut, the engine warning light comes on and the car may stall and not restart. Mitsubishi corrected it with a recall that replaces the relay (Safety Gate A12/0099/18).
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalMitsubishi LancerETACS control unit fault: headlights and wipers can stop workingYes: in 2015 a campaign was registered over a non-conformity in the ETACS electronic control unit of Lancers built between October 2008 and September 2010, as a result of which the headlights or wipers, among other systems, could stop working. The remedy described is to replace the control unit if its manufacturing date falls within the affected range.
