2.0 FSI engine (EA113): faults and reliability

Volkswagen / Audi 2.0 FSI atmosférico (EA113) · Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda

The 2.0 FSI is the naturally aspirated version with which the Volkswagen Group introduced petrol direct injection in a two-litre engine, before moving on to the turbocharged 2.0 TSI. Two faults recur across several models: carbon build-up on the intake valves, inherent to direct injection, and ignition coil failure, documented from 5,000 km in one case. Gebrauchtwagenberater.de nevertheless counts it among the most reliable petrol engines in the Audi A4 B7.[1][2][3][4]

    With caution

Gebrauchtwagenberater.de singles out the 2.0 FSI, along with the naturally aspirated 1.6, as one of the most reliable petrol engines in the Audi A4 B7. Even so, two faults recur across several models and are worth checking before buying: carbon build-up on the intake valves and ignition coil failure.[1][2][3][4][8]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.0 FSI is

The 2.0 FSI is the naturally aspirated four-cylinder version with which the Volkswagen Group introduced petrol direct injection (FSI, Fuel Stratified Injection) in the two-litre capacity from 2003. It was fitted to Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda models until, around 2008-2009, the turbocharged EA888 family (2.0 TSI/TFSI) gradually replaced it, model by model.[5][6]

It is a 1,984 cc engine with twin overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16 valves and chain-driven timing: 150 hp (110 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm from 3,250-3,500 rpm in all the documented codes, with a high compression ratio (12:1) typical of direct injection.[5]

In its first units (code AXW) it used stratified-charge combustion at part load - the original idea behind FSI technology, which burns the mixture in a small zone of the chamber to save fuel - but Volkswagen abandoned it at the end of 2005 on the 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI because of its technical limitations, and switched to conventional homogeneous combustion in the remaining codes.[9]

It should not be confused with the turbocharged 2.0 TFSI that Volkswagen and Audi began fitting from 2004 in the Golf V GTI or the Audi A3 8P - a different engine, covered in another file on this site - nor with the 2.0 TSI/TFSI of the EA888 family that replaced it from 2008: in the Audi A3 8P, for example, the naturally aspirated 2.0 FSI gave way to a turbocharged 1.8 TFSI with 160 hp in April 2008.[10]

What changed between versions

  1. 2003–2009

    2.0 FSI (EA113, 150 hp, 2003-2009)

This is the only power output documented for this engine: 150 hp (110 kW) and 200 Nm in the codes we have been able to verify in open sources (AXW, BLR, BLX, BVX, BVY). In its first units (AXW, from 2003) it ran on stratified-charge combustion at part load, the original FSI technology; at the end of 2005 Volkswagen switched the 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI to conventional homogeneous combustion because of the technical limitations of stratified charge.[5][9]
