2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD) engine: faults and reliability

Toyota 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (serie GD: 2GD-FTV and 1GD-FTV) · Toyota

No serious mechanical faults are documented in the European sources we were able to open: AutoBild saw the 2.8 as more robust than the 3.0 it replaced, although it points to glow plugs that fail early. Its best-documented weak point is the particulate filter, with a lawsuit in Australia but no equivalent recall or legal action in Europe, and there are barely any high-mileage examples from which to judge long-term reliability.[1][2][3]

Which 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD) versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.4 D-4D 150 (2GD-FTV, 150 hp, from 2016)

    since 2016 · 150 hp · 2GD-FTV

    With caution

There are no serious mechanical faults documented in Europe for the 2.4, but it shares the particulate filter technology and the Australian lawsuit also names the 2GD-FTV: it is worth knowing how the car has been used and that regenerations are not left unfinished.[8][9]

  • 2.8 D-4D 177 (1GD-FTV, 177 hp, 2015-2020)

    2015–2020 · 177 hp · 1GD-FTV

    With caution

This is the version before the 2020 update, with the particulate filter that Toyota Australia says it later modified in hardware and software and which was the subject of the Australian lawsuit; it is worth checking its usage and maintenance history and asking whether the glow plugs have already been replaced, which AutoBild cites as what fails first.[1][2][8]

  • 2.8 D-4D 204 (1GD-FTV, 204 hp, from 2020)

    since 2020 · 204 hp · 1GD-FTV

    Buy

We have not found serious faults specific to this version in European sources. Toyota Australia attributes hardware and software changes in the particulate filter to the 2020 Hilux, but we have not confirmed that they apply to European units; the accumulated mileage is still low, so the absence of documented faults is not a guarantee.[8]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD) is

The GD series is the four-cylinder diesel family with which Toyota replaced the KD series from 2015 in its ladder-frame models. It is built in Japan, India and Thailand and combines a variable-geometry turbo with common-rail injection. In the cars sold in Europe there are two displacements: the 2GD-FTV of 2,393 cc (2.4 D-4D) and the 1GD-FTV of 2,755 cc (2.8 D-4D). According to ADAC data sheets, both are Euro 6, have a particulate filter with an SCR catalyst that uses AdBlue, and use a timing chain.[4][6][7]

The eighth-generation Hilux arrived in the United Kingdom in April 2016 with the 150 hp 2.4 D-4D as its only engine; the 2020 facelift added the 2.8 D-4D, which rises to 204 hp and up to 500 Nm with the automatic gearbox. In the Land Cruiser J150 the 2.8 arrived in 2015 in place of the 3.0 D-4D, with 177 hp, and from October 2020 to August 2024 it was sold in Germany with 204 hp, according to ADAC.[1][5][6][7]

In January 2024 Toyota acknowledged irregularities in the power certification tests of three diesel engines, including the 1GD-FTV and the 2GD-FTV, whose tests were carried out by Toyota Industries: a version of the engine control unit software different from the production one was used, with results that appeared more uniform. Toyota maintains that the engines concerned meet the power requirements and that there is no need to stop using the vehicles; the Spanish press reported that imports of these models with these engines to Europe were halted and that units already delivered to customers should not be affected. The Japanese ministry lifted the suspension on shipments of Toyota Industries engines on 27 February 2024, and Hilux shipments from Thailand resumed on 4 March.[10][11][12]

In its used-car test of the Land Cruiser 150, from January 2020, AutoBild considered that the new 2.8 seemed, at least until then, to give fewer problems and to be more robust than the previous 3.0, whose Denso injectors were indeed a risk, although it warned that there were fewer high-mileage examples. The UK recall database (DVSA) records no particulate filter recall for the Hilux or the Land Cruiser: for the Hilux it only lists recalls for other systems, and for the Land Cruiser two small ones without specifying the engine (the exhaust urea injector flange, with 589 vehicles built between June 2015 and January 2016, and a poorly tightened fuel pipe on the Prado, with 87 vehicles from March and April 2019). The European Hilux listings we have reviewed only show recalls for airbags, eCall and power steering.[1][3][13]

What changed between versions

  1. 2015–2020

    2.8 D-4D 177 (1GD-FTV, 177 hp, 2015-2020)

A completely new engine with which the Land Cruiser J150 replaced the 3.0 D-4D in 2015, with 177 hp. AutoBild rated it in 2020 as more robust than the previous 3.0, although there were fewer high-mileage units.[1][4]

  2. since 2016

    2.4 D-4D 150 (2GD-FTV, 150 hp, from 2016)

2,393 cc diesel with a variable-geometry turbo, common rail and a timing chain. In Europe it is Euro 6 with a particulate filter and SCR with AdBlue (14-litre tank according to ADAC) and delivers 150 hp and 400 Nm. It was the only Hilux engine at its UK launch in April 2016.[4][5][7]

  3. since 2020

    2.8 D-4D 204 (1GD-FTV, 204 hp, from 2020)

Update of the 2.8 with 204 hp that arrived with the 2020 facelift of the Hilux and the Land Cruiser J150: Euro 6d-ISC-FCM, particulate filter with SCR (12-litre AdBlue tank in the Land Cruiser) and a timing chain; in the Hilux it reaches 500 Nm with the automatic gearbox. Toyota Australia attributes hardware and software changes in the particulate filter system to the Hilux of that year.[5][6][8]
