Rover K-Series engine: faults and reliability
Rover / MG K-Series (1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 16V, incluido el 1.8 VVC) · Rover, MG, Land Rover and Lotus
The Rover K-Series has one very well-known fault: the head gasket, which according to Diariomotor can fail at under 100,000 km and which technical sources link to a small cooling circuit and a badly placed thermostat. The usual repair uses the multi-layer (MLS) gasket developed for the Freelander; the other two documented faults (sunken liners and coolant leaks) are related to that same circuit.[1][2][3][4]
Which Rover K-Series versions should you buy?
Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.
- With caution
1.1 K8 60 hp / K16 75 hp (Rover 25, 1998-2005)
1998–2005 · 60–75 hp
We have not found faults specific to the 1.1, but it shares the family's small cooling circuit (about 5.5 litres in the ZR/ZS) and the head gasket's reputation; it is worth checking the coolant history before buying.[1][4]
- With caution
1.4 8V/16V 74-103 hp (14K2F / 14K4F, 1995-2005)
1995–2005 · 74–103 hp · 14K2F, 14K4F
Technical sources describe the head failure mainly on the 1.8, but Diariomotor speaks of "all K-Series"; it is worth buying if the coolant has been looked after and there are no signs of overheating.[1][3]
- With caution
1.6 16V 109-116 hp (16K4F, 1995-2005)
1995–2005 · 109–116 hp · 16K4F
This is one of the versions where technical sources place the change to "damp" liners, with less coolant between cylinders; Diariomotor recommends checking whether the gasket is already the reinforced one.[1][3]
- With caution
1.8 16V 117-136 hp (18K4F, 1995-2005)
1995–2005 · 117–136 hp · 18K4F
This is the version most cited in head gasket failures; it is worth buying if it already has the multi-layer (MLS) gasket with the liners measured, and Diariomotor considers its absence a good argument for negotiating the price.[1][3][6]
- With caution
1.8 VVC 145-160 hp (18K4K, 1995-2005)
1995–2005 · 145–160 hp · 18K4K
It shares the 1.8's head gasket problem (suppliers sell specific multi-layer kits for the VVC); we have not found faults specific to the VVC mechanism in open sources.[6][7]
- With caution
1.8 T turbo 150-160 hp (18K4T, 2002-2005)
2002–2005 · 150–160 hp · 18K4T
We have not found reliability data specific to the turbo; it inherits the K-Series' cooling circuit and gasket reputation, so it is worth demanding the coolant history.[1][4]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the Rover K-Series
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityCommonFrequency: CommonCylinder head and blockHead gasket failureThe K-Series' big problem is the head gasket, which can fail even below 100,000 km because of a mix of gasket design, cooling and overheating. The usual repair uses the multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket that was developed for the Freelander.
- 2High severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockSunken cylinder liners and warped head after overheatingAfter overheating, the K-Series liners can end up below the surface of the block and the aluminium head can be marked or warped; then no gasket seals properly and the liner height has to be measured and restored.
- 3Medium severityOccasionalFrequency: OccasionalCoolingCoolant leaks: expansion tank cap, rear block rail and hosesThe K-Series circuit holds about 5.5 litres, so a slow leak empties the expansion tank and causes localised overheating. The points cited are the tank cap, the metal rail at the rear of the block (corrosion), the hoses and the coolant passages of the inlet manifold gasket.

What the Rover K-Series is
The K-Series is a family of four-cylinder petrol engines with an aluminium block and head, from 1,113 to 1,796 cm³, introduced by Rover Group in the late 1980s in the Rover 200 and built until 2005 by Powertrain Ltd, a sister company of MG Rover. The block and head were low-pressure cast in LM25 alloy, with iron liners and long through-bolts holding the assembly together; there are 8-valve (K8) and 16-valve (K16) heads, and the 1.8 VVC with variable valve timing control.[5]
The usual displacements are 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8. The 1.1 and 1.4 have wet liners; the 1.6 and 1.8, with a larger bore (80 mm), have "damp" liners, with less coolant between the cylinders. In addition there is the 1.8 VVC with 145 to 160 hp and a 1.8 turbo with 150 to 160 hp exclusive to the Rover 75 and the MG ZT (2002-2005).[3][5]
It was fitted to the Rover 200 (third generation), 25, 45 and 75, the MG ZR, ZS and ZT, the MGF and TF sports cars, the Land Rover Freelander 1.8 and the first- and second-series Lotus Elise. MG Rover halted production in April 2005 when it went into administration. In Spain there are adverts for the Rover 25, 45 and 75 (79 Rover adverts in total) and the MG ZR, ZT, TF and MGF appear in the coches.net model index.[8][9][10][11][12]
The K-Series' reputation revolves almost entirely around the head gasket. The open documentation comes mainly from a Spanish buying guide (Diariomotor, 2023), British reviews and parts suppliers; we have not found failure statistics. After the collapse of MG Rover, the engine's successors (the N-Series and the SAIC developments) had a redesigned gasket, oil rail and structure. This page does not cover the KV6 V6, the L-Series diesel or the Lotus VHPD versions.[1][5][13]
